Johnston County saw many successes in 2006

Looking back over the county’s progress during 2006, Commissioner Tony Braswell says that there were so many accomplishments, he can’t say which was the biggest for the county.
“There have been so many that if you were to ask me to rate them, I’m not sure I can,” said Commissioner Braswell.
One major accomplishment, said Braswell, was maintaining the tax rate for county citizens. The Board of Commissioners was able to pass a budget that refrained from increasing taxes for this year, which Braswell said was a big task, but worthwhile for the citizens of the county.
Another success for the county was the incorporation of an agricultural district ordinance, which allows a sort of voluntary agricultural district to form.
The commissioners also produced a final report from the recreation and steerage committee, which led to its approval of a $3.7 million bond for recreation county-wide.
Two other bond referendums received approval from the commissioners this year. One calls for $10 million for expansion and renovation on the Johnston Community College campus, while another $99 million is intended for Johnston County Schools. Part of the bond for Johnston County Schools is intended to build the new Princeton Elementary School.
Seeing through the process of voter approval for the bonds is one of the board’s goals for 2007, said Commissioner Braswell.
Commissioner Braswell feels that the single most important task of the board in the coming year is to adopt a growth management plan for Johnston County.
“We have a lot of ideas on the table,” said Commissioner Braswell. “But I want to make sure the final report is fair to all citizens.”
He said the plan is going to be difficult to balance because the county is so diversified.
“The people of Princeton and Pine Level are looking forward to expanding,” he said, while other areas are looking for ways to manage their growth rate.”
