4-H offers summer classes

Ham & Yam Cooking Contest
Ham Dish Categories are Appetizers and Snacks, Main Dish and Casseroles and Salads. Yam Dish Categories are Casseroles and Vegetables, Breads, and Desserts. The contest is open to youth ages 9-18. Winners in each category will receive a ribbon and $15 for 1st Place, $10 for Second Place and $5 for Third Place. Samples of winning recipes will be displayed at the Ham and Yam Festival on Saturday. The Cooking Contest is sponsored by NC Cooperative Extension, Centenary United Methodist Church, and the Smithfield Downtown Development Corporation. What is that Yam Thing?
Entries should be made from a Sweet Potato and fit into the categories of person, thing or animal. The contest is open to youth ages 12 and under. Sweet Potatoes will be available at Wilson’s Mills, South Smithfield, and West Smithfield Elementary Schools as well as Howell Theater, and the Cooperative Extension Office the week of April 30 - May 4. Entries will be accepted from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the corner of 2nd and Johnston Streets behind the courthouse. Judging will begin at 7 p.m. sharp. Official entry forms will be available on site. The Sweet Potatoes were donated by B&B Produce of Benson. The Yam Thing Contest is sponsored by Johnston County 4-H, Howell Theater, and Smithfield Downtown Development Corporation. Johnston County 4-H Summer Fun Classes Now Enrolling!

Some of the exciting activities going on this summer are

Outdoor Adventures
June 13
Location: 4-H Office
8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (office) 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Howell Woods)

Come canoe the Neuse River; learn about nature and water quality while floating through beautiful forests and soaking up the great outdoors. This activity meets at Howell Woods EEC at 9 a.m. or the Extension office at 8 a.m. We will return to Howell Woods EEC at 3:30 p.m. or to the Extension office at 4:15 p.m. We will eat on the river, while in the canoes, so please bring a simple non-perishable bag lunch with drink, snack and enough water for the day. Must be prepared to paddle for 4 to 4 1/2 hours.

Just Horsin’ Around
June 15
8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Location: Livestock Arena

Have you always wanted a horse but just didn’t have a place to keep one? Would you like to know what it’s like to care for and even ride one? Then this one-day camp is for you. Come learn about different breeds of horses, the equipment required for ownership, how to saddle, feed, make a craft, groom and even ride a horse. Taught by experienced 4-H Horse Club members. Bring a bag lunch with snacks and drinks.

Digital Photography
June 19 & 26
(9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 19; 9 a.m.-12 p.m. June 26)
Location: 4-H Office

Learn basic photography skills day one. Practice for a week taking pictures as assigned. Come back on the 26th for critique. Bring your own digital camera and cords. Bring a bag lunch, snacks and drinks.
Ages: 9+; $5; Max 20

Red Cross Babysitting
June 20
9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Location: 4-H Office

Red Cross certified babysitting course. Bring a bag lunch.
Ages: 10-18; $40; Max 12

Electric Camp
June 21
9:00AM-3:00PM
Location: 4-H Office
Learn basic wiring while making a lamp. Participants will make a lamp from a gallon jar, then fill the jar with whatever they choose. Participants will need to bring shells, stones, marbles, decorative paper, etc. to fill their lamp. Bring a bag lunch, snacks and drinks.

Cornhusk Dolls
June 27

Location: 4-H Office
Learn to make a cornhusk doll.
Ages: 9 and over Cost: $5.00 Max: 15

Butterfly Cloverbud Camp
June 28
9:00AM-12:00 noon
Location: Livestock Arena
Learn fun butterfly facts and make a craft to take home. Dress for outdoor fun and sun. Bring your own snack and drink.
Ages: 5-8 Cost: $5.00 Max: 20

College Day #1
June 28

Participants will visit JCC and ECU campuses. Bring a bag lunch with snacks and drinks.
Ages: Rising 8th graders & up Cost: $10.00 Max: 10

Around The World
July 9-10
9:00AM – 2:00PM
Location: 4-H Office
Come enjoy a cultural experience with crafts, food and fun. We will learn different customs of countries around the world, and try our hand at cooking some traditional dishes. Materials, lunch and snacks will be provided.
Ages: 10 & Up Cost: $20 Max: 12

Mind your Manners
July 12-13
9AM-3PM Thursday, 9AM-2:00PM Friday
Location: 4-H Office
Youth will learn social skills; getting along with others, phone etiquette, table manners and skills for meeting new people. Parents are invited on Friday to a lunch prepared by participants. They will demonstrate their newly acquired skills. Taught by a rising High School Senior. Bring your snacks and drinks both days and a bag lunch on Thursday.

“Opossum” Cloverbud Camp
July 19
9:00AM – 12Noon
Location: Livestock Arena
Learn about the opossum while making a related craft to take home. Be prepared for outdoor play and sunshine. Have so much fun you won’t even realize how much you have learned. Please wear old clothes. Bring your own snack and drink
Ages: 5-8 Cost: $5.00 Max: 20

Biotechnology Camp
July 24 & 25
9AM – 4PM
Location: Workforce Development Center, Clayton
Participants will have lots of fun working in teams using clues and hands-on experiments in real life situations. Youth will conduct their own biotechnology experiments in a real lab setting. Please bring a bag lunch, snacks and drinks.
Ages: 12 & Up Cost: $30 Max: 10

College Day #2
July 26

Location: 4-H Office
Participants will visit Campbell and Mt. Olive campuses. Bring a bag lunch with snacks and drinks.
Ages: Rising 8th graders & up Cost: $10.00 Max: 10

Geocaching
July 31

Location: Howell Woods Environmental Center
Learn to use GPS units and try your luck locating a cache hidden on the grounds. Afterwards learn about wildlife habitats. Bring a bag lunch with snacks and drinks and enough water for the day.

College Day #3

Location: 4-H Office
Participants will visit Wake Tech. and NCSU campuses. Bring a bag lunch with snacks and drinks.

Johnston County Top to Bottom
August 14

Location: 4-H Office
Join our tour of county towns, offices and much more. Sit in on a court session and visit local government offices. Bring a bag lunch with snacks and drinks.

Knitting
August 16

Location: 4-H Office
Participants will learn basic knitting stitches to make a scarf. Participants will need to bring one set of short knitting needles size 14 or larger and one skein of basic inexpensive yarn. Bring your own snack and drink.
Ages: 10 and over Cost: Supplies Max: 6

Back to School with the Triple A Look for Less
August 21

Location: 4-H Office
Learn how to choose clothes that have the name brand look for less. Bring or wear your favorite back to school outfit. Bring your own snack and drink.

Sewing for Beginners
August 22

Location: 4-H Office
Learn to sew basic straight lines while making a tote bag. Participants will choose their bag’s look, (quilted or not). Bring your own snack and drink.

Sewing What?
August 23

Participants will make a pair of shorts. Need previous sewing ability to measure and follow a pattern. Bring your own snack and drink.
