Dawgs pull one out at NJ

3 May 2007 - The Bulldog boys survived a tough night at North Johnston Friday night to maintain a perfect conference mark. Last night they had the chance to clinch the conference title.

Last Tuesday Princeton traveled to North Duplin and Princeton posted a 13-4 win over the Rebels. Saturday they hosted Cary Academy in a 10-0 win.

The win Friday against the Panthers set Princeton up for the clincher Tuesday, as the narrow victory kept Princeton two games ahead of Rosewood and pushed North Johnston three games back. A win this Tuesday against Ayden-Grifton at home will seal the deal, as the Bulldogs will be at least two games up with one game left.

Regardless of the wins and losses, Friday’s game will be an emotional one, as the Bulldogs will travel to Rosewood. Princeton’s only loss to a conference foe came at Rosewood’s hands, though the Deacon Jones Easter Tournament championship game didn’t count in the league standings. The following week the Bulldogs shut out the Eagles on the Princeton diamond, the same field they had tasted defeat on just a few days earlier.

Princeton began last week with a strong game at North Duplin, and the Bulldogs brought their good bats. Daniel Gerrell led Princeton with four hits. Dustin Pate, Jared McLamb and Andrew Cobb each had two hits for the Bulldogs, with McLamb and Cobb each tagging homers in the win.

Ryan Daughtry picked up the win on the mound for Princeton.

Friday night was a real nail biter as the two teams were tied going into the top of the seventh. McLamb led off the inning with a single and stole second. After two outs, Colin Parker brought him home with a single.

Princeton jumped out with two runs in the first. Parker led off with a double, coming home on an error. Michael Radford reached on a dropped third strike, stole a base, and scored on Gerrell’s single.

In the fourth Daughtry singled and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cobb. Adam Nethercutt and Pate added two more runs on Pate’s homer.

Parker had a couple of hits in the key win.

Saturday Princeton capitalized on three hits by Cobb, including a triple. Parker had two hits, and Pate again went deep, another two-run shot in the easy win over Cary Academy.

Coach Bruce Proctor was breathing a sigh of relief after Friday’s tough win, but trying to keep his team focused in the final week. “I know we are not going to have any trouble getting ready for Rosewood, but I don’t want to overlook Ayden-Grifton,” he said Tuesday morning. The Bulldogs hosted the Chargers Tuesday evening.

Next Monday the Bulldogs will have a final non-conference game, with South Johnston coming to Princeton for a 7 p.m. match.
