Prune frost-damaged plants
3 May 2007 - The frost a couple of weeks ago did quite a bit of damage to several plants that had already put out new growth. The time has come to take a look at those frost damaged pants and see what growth was completely killed and what has had a chance to regrow.
Most plants that were damaged should have had the chance by now to start to put out some new growth. It may not be much, but it should be enough to determine how far back the wood was killed. Look for this new growth and prune back to where the new growth starts.
It is important to prune out any dead wood. Dead wood is an easy entrance point for disease organisms and wood boring insects. Cuts should be made a quarter to a half an inch past any new growth.
For any questions contact the Extension Master Gardeners at 989-5380 or jcmastergardener@yahoo.com. We are here to help people put research-based knowledge to work for economic prosperity, environmental stewardship, and an improved quality of life. |
