E. Columbus nips RHS in 10, 3-2

24 May 2007 — The Rosewood Eagles played well in the latter half of the baseball season, but couldn’t quite hold off East Columbus last Tuesday, falling 3-2 in ten innings.

Rosewood took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Gators rallied with one in the sixth and the game went to extra innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, EC got a runner to third. With two outs, the Eagles could have escaped as Cody Richards induced the final batter to hit a grounder, and Goss Kendall got to the ball deep in the hole between third and short, but the runner beat the throw to first and EC’s winning run counted.

The Gator pitching limited Rosewood to just four hits. Kendall got two of those hits, and got two walks, and scored both Rosewood runs. David Smeltzer added a double, and Richards got the other one.

Richards got the loss in two innings of relief. he only gave up two hits.

Matt Neal threw another strong outing, going seven innings. He limited EC to just three hits while striking out 11.

The loss in the second round of the state playoffs ends a strong season for second year coach Josh Smith. Rosewood ended the year at 17-6.

“I am very proud of our team’s effort and heart. We just came up a little short.”

Rosewood will lose three seniors off this team: Smeltzer, Kendall and Garrett Howell.
