Langdon heads to NCSU

18 July 2007 — Two students from Johnston County High Schools were selected to attend the weeklong Resource Conservation Workshop held recently at NC State University. Lewis Braswell, from West Johnston High School, and D.J. Langdon, from Princeton High School, were chosen based on their academic achievements and interest in pursuing a career in natural resource management or a related field of study.

The students participated in an intensive week-long study of conservation practices and hands-on training provided by professionals in all areas of resource management. Students were taught soil and water conservation, forestry, wildlife and fisheries management, water quality, watershed planning, animal waste management and innovative best management practices. NCSU dormitories housed the students for the week and exposed them to a taste of university campus life.

Among the 78 students who attended from across the state, Lewis Braswell received a cash prize for placing third highest in the evaluation assessment for the week. D.J. Langdon was one of only eight students nominated for the prestigious Grady Lane Scholarship Award for his outstanding leadership qualities, scholastic ability and moral values. “Johnston County could not have been more proud of Lewis and D.J. for their high caliber and character during the workshop,” says Susan Woodard, of the Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District, who worked as a presenter for the workshop.

The Resource Conservation Workshop is sponsored by the NC Division of Soil and Water Conservation, the Soil Science Dept. at NC State University, the Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and NC Soil and Water Conservation Commission. Four Oaks Bank and Trust and the Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored the students from Johnston County.

D.J.’s parents are Dirk and Loretta Langdon of Smithfield. Loretta is a science teacher at Princeton.
