Wayne names 2007-08 Teachers of the Year

18 July 2007 — Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) is excited to announce the 2007-2008 Teachers of the Year (TOY) that will represent each particular school in the coming school year.

"Because we have so many outstanding teachers, selecting a Teacher of the Year at the school level is a difficult task for our schools," states Dr. Steven Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. "Teachers of the Year truly represent the best of the teaching profession, and were selected because they have demonstrated dedication and commitment to helping their students advance."

The 2007-2008 Teachers of the Year include:

Brogden Middle: Deborah Royall

Brogden Primary: Rhonda Wiggins

Rosewood Elementary: Merle Elam

Rosewood High: Cathy Best

Rosewood Middle: Elizabeth McDaniel

Each individual school’s Teacher of the Year will now compete for the system-wide honor. A team of evaluators will now review portfolios submitted by TOY candidates and narrow the list to three finalists for the system-wide Teacher of the Year-one each from the elementary, middle, and high school level.

The three finalists will each receive Twiford Worldview Travel/Study Awards. The finalist who is selected as the Wayne County Public Schools Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000 travel/study stipend, and the other two finalists will each receive a $4,000 travel/study stipend.

The stipend will allow the finalists to travel outside the United States in order to enhance their global perspective, which transfers to their students in the form of exciting lessons and classroom experiences.

"We are fortunate to have a program of such caliber in Wayne County Public Schools," adds Dr. Taylor. "The program offers our Teacher of the Year finalists opportunities for travel experience, and is invaluable to their personal and professional development."

The system-wide Teacher of the Year will be named at the annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on Tuesday, August 28, at the Goldsboro County Club. The teacher selected as Wayne County Public Schools Teacher of the Year from the group of finalists will advance to the regional level. The system-wide Teacher of the Year will also receive $1,500 in addition to the travel award.
