Be your own weatherman
18 July 2007 — How much rain did you get?
Asking this question of neighbors and friends is how many people get their weather information. A grassroots organization of volunteers started an organization to track the amount of precipitation in an area. The organization is the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network also called CoCoRaHS.
This network of volunteers is made up of people of all ages. The only requirement to become a volunteer is an enthusiasm for watching and reporting weather conditions and a desire to learn how weather affects our lives.
CoCoRaHS is coming to North Carolina this September. The State Climate Office of NC at NC State University, along with National Weather Services offices that serve North Carolina, are working to join this national program.
CoCoRaHS helps provide accurate high-quality precipitation data to several organizations and groups. They increase the density of precipitation data which means they verify that computer models are correct. This also provides a fun way for citizens to become involved in meteorological science and provides enrichment activities for teachers, educators and the community at large.
The data is recorded on a website where people can go to get the answer to the question, “How much rain did you get last night?” The volunteers will be entering the data after each precipitation event (Rain, Hail or Snow), and the data will be available to everyone.
For more information on CoCoRaHS, its sponsors, and history, visit their website at http://www.cocorahs.org/. Look for more information on how you can become a volunteer reporter for this network coming in the next few weeks.
