Princeton championship Dawgs, take two

25 July 2007 — Princeton’s winning ways in baseball have resulted in another state championship.
The District 4 Dawgs, representing Johnston and Wilson counties, laid claim to the Eastern North Carolina State Championship for the Babe Ruth 16-18 year olds earlier this month.
Most of that all star team came from the Princeton Babe Ruth team, and most of that team came from the high school squad that won the state 1-A championship including: Andrew Cobb, Ryan Daughtry, Daniel Gerrell, Jonathan Hartley, Christopher Hinton, Jared McLamb, Adam Nethercutt, Denver Nixon, Colin Parker, Dustin Pate, and Michael Radford. Others from the Princeton team on the Dawgs were: Dale Price, Brandon Roberts, Dusty Rose, and Jonathan Rose. From the Wilson County team were Barrett Parker and Alex Howard, and from the Wilson Christian Academy team was Adam Stallings.
The Dawgs took the championship, holding on for a 6-3 win over Crystal Coast.
After the Crystal Coast pitcher opened the game with two walks, the next batter for the Dawgs cashed the mistakes. Daniel Gerrell stroked a three-run homer.
In the second, the Dawgs made the lead comfortable, as Gerrell stroked a double with two on to make it 5-0. Andrew Cobb followed with a single to make it 6-0.
Dustin Pate was on the mound for the Dawgs, and he limited Crystal Coast to a single run through five innings. He got a big help when Ryan Daughtry turned a double play, tagging second and getting the runner at first with the throw. When Pate started running into a bit of trouble in the sixth, Daughtry came on in relief.
A second Crystal Coast run came home in the sixth, and in the seventh, the Dawgs gave up an unearned run, but Daughtry closed the game out without Crystal Coast getting any closer.
Gerrell added another single.
Pitching and defense got the Dawgs into the championship, as they limited their opponents in the first three games to two runs or fewer, while putting up at least six in each game.
Cobb led the Dawg hitters with six hits on the series, including a homer, while Gerrell ended the series with five hits. Radford added four hits. Daughtry had two homers.
Brandon Roberts pitched a six-hit complete game in the opener. Barrett Parker had a six inning effort, limiting Crystal Coast to one run on three hits.
