Johnston Memorial honors local EMTs

25 July 2007 — Johnston Memorial Hospital applauded “lifesavers” across the county during its 19th annual EMS banquet on May 7. In all, fifteen EMTs, a county 911 dispatcher and a first responder collected awards. More than 200 people attended the event, which took place in the atrium at Johnston Community College.
Apart from the awards presentation, the audience participated in a candlelight service to remember twelve emergency workers who died last year, some while on duty.
While the names of all the award winners are kept under wraps, one of them was perhaps a bigger surprise than others: David Eatman of Selma, a 66-year-old paramedic, won the award that bears his name.
Since 1988, the Eatman-Edwards Excellence Award has been given to someone who works hard to raise the standards of emergency medical care. Eatman and his friend David Edwards were known for their passion to improve EMS care.
Eatman joined Selma EMS in 1975, two years after the organization formed. After receiving his EMT certification, he taught EMS classes at JCC and became an evaluator. Since 1989, he was worked full time for Johnston Ambulance Service. David Edwards died several years ago.
Every year, a committee of hospital and EMS leaders select the award winners. Seven awards were given by Johnston Memorial’s EMS medical director, Dr. Ben Winter. He and Dr. Frank Conn, the EMS assistant medical director, awarded Melissa Austin of Smithfield, outstanding Emergency Medical Dispatcher; Jimmy Murray, outstanding EMS First Responder; Shayla Jones of Princeton, outstanding EMT; Daniel Daniels of Selma, outstanding EMT-Intermediate; Josh Holloman and Melissa Newsome, outstanding EMT-Paramedics; Angela Piper, outstanding captain; and David Lane, outstanding training officer.
Three EMTs received “Hero” awards. They were paramedic Stephen McClean of Smithfield EMS, paramedic Chris Budine of Four Oaks EMS, and EMT-Intermediate Maynard Glaspie of North Johnston EMS and 50/210 EMS.
Mark Holloman of Pine Level received the Michael Jackson Community Service Award. He is a paramedic at Clayton EMS. He works fulltime as a senior law enforcement officer at WakeMed.
Two volunteer paramedics, Michael White of Smithfield EMS and Melissa Federico of Benson EMS, received the Karl Baker Education Award.
Also, Dewayne West, the county’s emergency management director, was honored for “excellence and commitment to EMS.” Grady and Dr. Winter also received awards for their service to EMS. EMTs practice under the medical license of the EMS medical director, who also oversees the EMS program countywide.
