DR. REV. ROBERT L. ATKINSON

Dr. Rev. Robert L. Atkinson, 93, of Princeton, died Saturday, July 21, at home.

He was the son of the late James Henry Atkinson and Emma Frances Nixon Atkinson.

A home going celebration will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Goldsboro-Raleigh Assembly Church of Christ Disciples of Christ, 214 W. Hooks River Rd., with Sr. Bishop Mordecai Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Spells Cemetery, Clayton.

He is survived by six children, Mae Frances Ashford of Princeton, Madge L. Atkinson of East Orange, NJ, Robert Wesley and Doris Atkinson of Princeton, Lessie A. Sowell of Greensboro, Peggy Atkinson and fiancé Leroy Jones of Princeton, Matthew Jerome Atkinson of Goldsboro, Michelle Harper and Maurice of Greensboro whom he raised, and a special friend of the family, Annie Sykes of Princeton.

There will be an inspirational wake held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Stephens Church of Christ Disciples of Christ, Princeton.

REV. JAMES R. ROWE

The Rev. James Rudolph Rowe, 72, of Pikeville, died early Wednesday morning, July 18, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wayne County on June 6, 1935, he was the son of the late George and Leona Moore Rowe and husband of the late Irma Jean Barwick Rowe. The youngest of nine children, he was preceded in death by brothers, Edison, George Jr., Othel, Robert; sisters, Ruby, Myrtle, Annie and Jewel; and an infant son, George Oscar Rowe. A member of Rosewood Baptist Church, he was a founding member of the King’s Messengers Quartet and was active with the Neuse Baptist Association. He was a former member of the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed delivering Meals On Wheels for WAGES. His lifetime ministry was small churches and the youth.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 20 at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Stallings, the Rev. Larry Bostian and the Rev. Vernon Braswell officiating. Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Pittman Rowe; his children, Thomas and Vivian Rowe of Dudley, Mary and Kenneth Gardner and Lynne and Tommy Herndon, all of Pikeville; grandchildren, Clay and Hy Gardner, Crystal and Berry Gray, Elizabeth Rowe, Reagan Herndon and Trent Herndon; one great-grandchild, Wyatt Gardner; stepchildren, Gary and Dawn Pittman, Roger and Gale Pittman, Sheila and Steve Brogden, Greg and Wendy Pittman, Denise and Allen Daniels, Donald and Donna Bass; 17 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

The Rowe family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Gideon’s International or to Meals On Wheels.

ALTON G. WORLEY

Alton Gray Worley, 68, of Selma, died Saturday morning, July 21.

He was born in Johnston County on August 5, 1938 and was the son of the late Leslie and Clarissa Surles Worley.

The graveside service was conducted Tuesday morning, July 24, at Progressive Church Cemetery with the Reverend Percy Coleman officiating.

He is survived by two daughters, Georgia Booth of Charlotte and Linda Koss of Raleigh; a brother, Glenn Worley of Rosewood; a sister, Linda Martin of Princeton; and six grandchildren.

SHIRLEY S. EVERY

Shirley Spell Every, 72, of Princeton, died Tuesday morning, July 24, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born December 30, 1934 in Johnston County and was the daughter of the late Woodard Harris and Cecil Robbins Spell.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton with the Reverend Dennis Pollock officiating.

She is survived by a son, Danny Bridgers of Princeton; two daughters, Sherrie B. Stanley of Smithfield and Zelda Gray Tedder of Princeton; her mother, Cecil R. Spell of Princeton; her brother, Glenn Spell of Princeton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

The family will receive friends beginning at 6 p.m. and immediately following the funeral service at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton.

 

BETTIE H. GODWIN

Bettie Lee Holland Godwin, 90, of Princeton, died Tuesday morning, July 24, in Britthaven of Goldsboro.

Born in Johnston County on April 17, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Bennett and Martha Bass Holland and was the widow of Leamon Harris Godwin. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest “Bo” Godwin and Earl Godwin and a daughter, Peggy Faye Godwin. She was a member of The Church of God on Edwards Street in Princeton.

Funeral services will be conducted tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Kelvin Adkins and the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. The burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26 in the cemetery at Fellowship United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Bill Godwin and Richard Godwin, both of Princeton; daughters, Betty Lou Sullivan of Princeton, Bonnie Sue Lancaster of Greenville, Joe Anne Best of Dudley and Rose Grimes of Pikeville; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service and at other times at the home of her son, Bill, 5566 Rains Crossroads Road, Princeton.

ROBERT L. PARNELL

Robert Lee Parnell, 65, of Princeton died Monday, July 23, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield.

Born December 10, 1941, in Johnston County, Mr. Parnell was the son of the late Kagie G. and Carrie Vaughn Parnell. He was formerly employed with Nello Teer Corp.

The funeral will be at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, July 25) at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro. Margaret Britt will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26 in the Hasting Cemetery in the Oakland community.

Surviving are two sisters, two half-sisters and a half-brother.

The family will receive friends after the funeral on Wednesday and other times at the home of his sister, Frances Woodard of 305 Graves St., Selma.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Va. 22312.
