Red Cross blood supply low

25 July 2007 — More than two weeks after it first put out an appeal for blood donors, the American Red Cross has seen some improvement in the blood supply, but blood types O positive and O negative are still urgently needed. Those blood types’ supply is currently a half-day’s worth.

“The public is responding to the call for blood donors,” commented Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Region. “The supply if type B blood has improved to almost a two-day supply. However, that’s still a day lower than the three-day supply we need to have on hand.”

If you want to donate, blood drives will be held locally, including:

July 29 – American Red Cross, Johnston County Branch, 801 S. Third Street, Smithfield, 12:30-5 p.m. Call 934-8481 for appointment.

August 1 – Benson Community Blood Drive, American Legion, 322 W. Main Street, sponsored by Benson Kiwanis Club, 2-6:30 p.m. Call 894-4261 for information and appointments.

August 2 – Kenly Community Blood Drive, Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 2:30-7 p.m., sponsored by Patrick’s Cafeteria. Call Jay at 631-5035 or 284-2470 for information and appointments.

August 4 – Johnston Community Church, 450 Janie Road, Selma, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 464-9513 for information and appointments.

August 7 – Smithfield Community Blood Drive, First Baptist Church, 202 S. Fourth Street, Smithfield, 1:30-6 p.m. Call 934-8481 for information and appointments.

August 8 – RBC Centura, 1181 Highway 70 West, Clayton, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Call 550-2260 for information and appointments.

August 18 – St. Mary’s Grove Church, 7987 Raleigh Road, Benson, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call Heather Markuson at 919-894-1784 for information and appointments.

August 23 – Johnston Memorial Hospital/Medical Mall North Entrance, 12-4:30 p.m. Call Kim Thompson or Connie Grad at 938-7759 for information and appointments.
