highway patrol accident report
1 August 2007 — The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported the following accidents in Johnston County:
Elio Hernandez, 18, of Zebulon was involved in an accident with Phyllis Bunn Winstead, 59, of Sims last Monday. Mr. Hernandez was traveling west on U.S. Highway 70 when he ran the stoplight at the intersection of the highway and Rains Mill Road. His vehicle struck Mrs. Winstead’s vehicle as it crossed the highway. Mr. Hernandez was cited for failure to stop at a stoplight, and the 2008 Peterbuilt truck he was driving sustained an estimated $2,000 worth of damages. Mrs. Winstead was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital. Her 2002 Chevrolet sustained an estimated $4,500 worth of damages.
Tammy Mills Parrish, 43, of Smithfield was involved in a single vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 70 on July 22. She was traveling west on the highway in the left lane when she ran off the road to the left. The vehicle came back on the roadway and, crossing both westbound lanes, ran off the road to the right and struck a ditch. Mrs. Parrish was cited for failure to maintain control, and her 1993 Geo sustained an estimated $800 in damages.
Velma Fay Pollard, 34, of Smithfield and Cassie Raper Whitley, 43, of Pikeville were involved in an accident on Rains Mill Road on July 20. Ms. Pollard’s was traveling East on Old Cornwallis Road when she stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Rains Mill Road, and then proceeded into the path of Mrs. Whitley’s vehicle, causing Mrs. Whitley’s vehicle to strike Ms. Pollard’s. Mrs. Whitley’s vehicle then struck a stop sign, causing $250 worth of damage to the sign. Her 2004 Honda sustained an estimated $8,000 worth of damages, while Ms. Pollard’s 2007 Ford sustained an estimated $6,500, and she was cited for failure to yield. Ms. Pollard and an eleven-year-old passenger were transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital.
