Train, car collision causes no fatalities
31 July 2007 — A Princeton family miraculously avoided serious injuries late Monday afternoon when their SUV was hit by a train.
Carli Gray, 26, of Holt’s Pond Rd., was driving her 2007 Dodge Caliber down Bardin Street across the railroad crossing when the car was hit in the rear door by a train. The impact knocked the car some 50 feet down the tracks, landing upside down in a ditch near the pump station.
Her two children, who were in car seats, were both taken from the vehicle without serious injury and transported to Johnston Memorial. Mrs. Gray was also taken out of the vehicle, and while she was clearly shaken, seems to have avoided serious injury as well; she was transported on to WakeMed.
According to Police Chief Eddie Lewis, the mother had just picked up her children at Princeton Day Care. The accident happened during a heavy thunderstorm, around 4 p.m., and Chief Lewis said she apparently did not see or hear the train before crossing the tracks.
Chief Lewis also praised the air bags and car seats. “They do work,” he said, noting the lack of more serious injuries in the wreck.
He noted the train engineer walked back from the scene to help.
Chief Lewis does not anticipate filing any charges in the accident.
