Younger ‘Dawgs take 45-0 loss at SJ

By Barry Merrill
NL Publisher

22 August 2007 — Despite being younger and not as big or fast, Princeton played fairly well against South Johnston during the first half. A long pass for a touchdown in the second quarter and an interception return for another TD effectively turned the tide.

The Trojans went on to a 45-0 shutout of the Bulldogs in the season opener for the two schools Friday night.

The aggressive Bulldogs kept after South for much of the first half. A sequence where Princeton forced a turnover when the Trojans were threatening to score turned demoralizing when Princeton fumbled the ball right back. That led to the second SJ touchdown.

Later in the quarter the Trojans made good on a 75-yard pass play.

On the offensive side, the Princeton running game opened some holes early, but South began getting good penetration and hauled Dawgs QB Dylan Myers down behind the line numerous times.

Myers was only able to complete two passes to Phillip Mitchell for 22 yards. He was picked off four times, the last going for a 98-yard interception for a touchdown to close the scoring.

Sunday, Princeton Coach Russell Williamson saw some bright spots despite the lopsided loss. “I didn’t think we played that badly on defense. We played very aggressive in the first half.”

He attributed fatigue to some of the let down in the second half. “They were platooning, we were not.”

He noted that senior linebacker Michael Radford had a good game. He cited another senior, Cameron White, as having a good game on defense, and said sophomore Chris Hill was around the ball a lot.

In addition to the aggressiveness he saw on the field, Coach Williamson said his team seems faster on defense.

Friday the Bulldogs will host North Moore. The Mustangs will be opening their season.

Coach Williamson said North Moore is also a young team with only five seniors. “They have a lot of sophomores playing, like us.”

He expects the game will be decided on big plays and turnovers.

Princeton’s 13-12 win over North Moore last year broke a 21 game losing streak. It was one of the Bulldogs’ two wins last year.

The JV game between the two schools at North Moore has been moved up to tonight (Wednesday).
