Eagle defense will grow in system, confidence
By Barry Merrill

22 August 2007 — One of the challenges facing a new coach is for his players to learn a new system. Once they learn it, they have to have confidence that the new system will work.
After Friday night’s loss to Goldsboro, new Rosewood Head Football Coach Bobby Britt knew his system was working. The system put the players in the right places to make the stops on defense. Against a bigger and stronger Goldsboro team, his defenders were unable to make the stops on two find Cougar backs. Given some more time to learn the system and to gain confidence, the coach believes his Eagle defense will be all right.
Rosewood will run a multiple 40 defense, and as they have more time to learn the system, they will put in a 50 look to change up the blocking assignments and give the offense a harder time. Coach Britt says that would have helped against Goldsboro Friday night.

Anchoring that 40 defense will be returning senior defensive ends Holt Rains (6’5”, 225 lbs.) and Andre Everette (6’, 200). Starting at the defensive tackle spots will be seniors Trevor Morris (5’10”, 260) and Joseph Person (5’11”, 245).
Returning senior Robert Franks will start at one of the inside linebacker posts, and another senior, David Templeton, will play at the other inside backer spot. Starting at outside linebackers will be seniors Eric Jones and Bryan Jones.
Senior Byron Cavenaugh is a returner at cornerback. Stephen McIntyre, another fine athlete, will start at the other corner. Sophomore Scott Pate will start at free safety.
An injury has sidelined Chris Hare, but the senior is expected to start at outside linebacker when he returns to duty.
With a number of starters playing both ways, look for a number of others to see extensive playing time during the year to give the starters a break. Junior Johnny Artis and senior Steven Ash will see plenty of time in at defensive tackle. Senior Marcus Daniels will give the starters a break at cornerback.
Linebacker subs will be juniors Jordan Owens and Josh Holmes at the outside slots, and junior Eric Martel in the inside slots.
As the Eagle defenders get more comfortable with the new system, look for Rosewood to put a tough defense on the field.
