Britt sees victory despite Eagles’ 48-0 loss

By Barry Merrill

22 August 2007 — Early in the second quarter, the two quality Goldsboro running backs had put up four touchdowns and the Cougars were solidly in command, 27-0. First year Rosewood Coach Bobby Britt was proud that his team played hard and in some ways played Goldsboro fairly even the rest of the way.

The scoreboard read Goldsboro 48, Rosewood 0 at the end of the night Friday, but Coach Britt chalked up some victories despite the score.

Goldsboro’s two big running backs who Coach Britt said could start for a lot of 4-A schools, chewed up the Rosewood defense, despite the coaching staff’s best efforts. “We put men where they should have been to stop the play,” Coach Britt said. “They just couldn’t make the play.”

He also said they had tried to install a Wing-T offense, but it became obvious in last week’s scrimmage and in the early part of Friday’s game that offense was not working for the Eagles. Things picked up for the Eagles offensively when they went to a spread offense and they seemed to have better running lanes. He plans to concentrate on that in practice this week.

He also said Sunday his defense was hurt by lack of time to put in all of the defense. They will be practicing taking out one of the linebackers and putting in another defensive lineman to change their look on defense and add some more men in the box against strong running teams.

Overall, he said they saw some things they can do well, and found some things they need to continue to work on.

He particularly cited the play of Sean Cornman at quarterback. Though a senior, he is converting from wide receiver to take over at the position. “He’s doing a good job and he’s working hard to get better.”

He also cited the play of David Templeton. Despite being only 5’7” and 150 lbs., Templeton is doing a good job of reading and reacting and getting to the line of scrimmage.

Stephen McIntyre made a big interception for the Eagle defense and played well.

He praised all of his team for playing hard and said they are working them hard in practice.

Friday the Eagles will host Southside.

The Seahawks will be playing their first regular season game after scrimmaging Thursday. They are also breaking in under a new coach and a new system. They will use a Wing-T and a spread package.

Coach Britt says having their first game under their belt should work to Rosewood’s advantage Friday night.

“We won’t see any teem more athletic than we saw Friday night. It also helps us adjust to game speed, playing Friday.”
