Eagle offense looks more comfortable in spread

22 August 2007 — When a new coach comes in with a new system, it takes a while for the kids to learn the new coach’s approach. Sometimes when the coach learns his players’ capabilities, he changes his approach.

New Rosewood Head Football Coach Bobby Britt is going through some of the latter with his offense.
He wanted to run mostly a Wing T offense, with a spread package to compliment and vary the Wing T, but after a scrimmage last week and their opening week loss to Goldsboro, Coach Britt is seeing more success coming out of the spread package than the Wing T.
“The spread package is giving us better running lanes,” Coach Britt said Sunday.
With the new offense and the new coach is a new quarterback. Sean Cornwell is a senior who converted to the position from wide receiver to take the signal caller duties. Coach Britt has confidence in his abilities, and expects him to get stronger in the position as he works to improve.
For his offense to gel, Cornwell will have to get the ball into the hands of his three key receivers: seniors Stephen McIntyre, Holt Rains, and Taylor Allen. McIntyre is a returning receiver and looks to be a big play guy for the Eagles this season.
The Eagle offense will feature three running backs: 6’ 195 lbs. junior Eric Martel, junior Cody Richards, and junior Josh Holmes. Martel is a returner to the backfield, and he led the Eagle ground game in the opener Friday night.
Cornwell is an athlete, Coach Britt says, and he can run when necessary.
Senior tackles Trevor Morris (260 lbs.) and Joseph Person (245 lbs.) anchor the offensive line. Junior Stephen Bostic will start at center, and juniors Jordan Owens and Johnny Artis will be the starters at guard.
With a number of the Eagles playing both ways, senior Steven Ash will see significant playing time at guard to give the starters a break, as will senior Brandon Dean, and look for senior Tyler Muntz to see a lot of time in at tackle.
Senior Cameron Lowe will be handling the place kicking duties. He will also be doing the punting, but that may change as senior Chris Hare returns from an injury. The coach may also try out sophomores Scott Pate and Will Beasley in the duties.
