Clayton Harvest Festival Sept. 12-16

29 August 2007 — The Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Harvest Festival from Wednesday, Sept. 12, through Sunday, Sept. 16, in downtown Clayton.

Carnival rides, amusements, and games will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. The carnival will be open from 5-11 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.

The Big Daddy Rhythm & The Heavyweights Band will headline this year’s entertainment schedule with a performance beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The popular music group will appear on the Harvest Festival stage beside the carnival area. Their repertoire includes classic soul, beach music, rock and roll, blues southern rock, ‘70’s & ‘80’s, and more.

Saturday, Sept. 15, will be the biggest day of the festival, with Main Street closed to traffic and the annual vendor fair from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Arts and crafts vendors, businesses, non-profit and other organizations will line the street offering their products and services to festival-goers.

The annual Antique Car Show will be a highlight of Saturday’s festivities, and local entertainment will appear on stage throughout the day. The annual Chamber Merchant’s Auction also will be held on stage.

The Chamber also is sponsoring the third annual “Clayton Idol” singing competition, with the final round of performances taking place on Friday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on the Harvest Festival stage.

The grand prize in this year’s competition is a recording session at MasterTrax Recording Studio in Selma. The final round of competition is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on the Harvest Festival stage.

Clayton Idol is divided into two age groups: 5-11 year olds and 12-18 year olds. The performer with the highest overall from among all the competitors will win the recording session. A cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the remaining age group.

Participants in each age group must be available to perform in a preliminary audition between 6 and 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, at The Clayton Center. Finalists will be chosen based on the preliminary performance. Finalists must be available to compete in the final competition on Friday.

All participants must provide their own music, and performances will be limited to up to three minutes.

Interested vocalists must complete a registration form and pay a $20 registration fee on or before Tuesday, Sept. 5, in order to compete in “Clayton Idol.” Registration forms are available from the Clayton Chamber, located at 301 E. Main St. in downtown Clayton. Forms can be downloaded from www.claytonchamber.com.

Clayton Idol is sponsored by the Chamber, MasterTrax Recording Studio, The Clayton Center and Four Oaks Bank.

The Clayton Harvest Festival is Clayton’s largest event and typically brings some 15,000 people to downtown Clayton. In addition to the “Clayton Idol” competition, the festival will feature a Saturday afternoon beach band performance, the annual Vendor Fair, Antique Car and Truck Show, Merchants Auction, local entertainment and an amusement area with games and rides.
