Detention Officer Training starts in September

29 August 2007 — Wayne Community College will start a new session of its Detention Officer Certification Training on Monday, Sept. 24.

Class will be held 6 p.m.-10 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on some Saturdays through Nov. 6. Registration will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17 in Room 211 of the Pine Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.

The state-accredited course provides students with the physical and cognitive skills needed for an entry-level detention officer position and mandated by the N.C. Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission through the N.C. Community College System.

The course stresses professionalism through ethics and communication skills; academic achievement; discipline; and officer safety while incorporating practical exercises with hands-on skills training.

Students who successfully complete the course and pass a state certification exam receive an academic certificate from the college and are eligible to work as detention officers in North Carolina.

Wayne Community College has a perfect record of placing its graduates in jobs in area detention facilities. Starting pay ranges from $24,000 to $31,000, according to WCC Law Enforcement Training Director Beverly Deans.

To enter the program, students must have no criminal record, be at least 21 years old, have a valid N.C. driver’s license, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. They must bring their driver’s license, Social Security card, certified copy of their criminal record check from the clerk of court of their county of residence, and a copy of their high school diploma or certified high school transcript to the preregistration session.

Course cost is around $155 for registration, uniform shirt and textbook and must be paid at preregistration.

For more information, contact Ms. Deans at (919) 735-5151, ext 329 or bdeans@waynecc.edu.
