Smooth sailing for beginning of school year

By Barry Merrill
NL Publisher

29 August 2007 — Some missed busses were the biggest concerns at area schools as Princeton and Rosewood schools opened for the first day Monday.

Princeton continues to add students, as the first day numbers were at 1436, and Principal Kirk Denning said that some returning students were not there on the first day but will be there Tuesday, and he expects more new students to register today and later this week. He noted that 141 students had registered at the school over the summer.

Last year the highest the school enrollment reached was 1423.

He also said the only real concern was a lack of parking space for the busses, but they were moving some parking around to solve the problem Tuesday.

While the enrollment on the tenth day is the official determining factor for more teachers, Mr. Denning said he does not expect the school to add any teachers this year over where they are now.

Rosewood Middle School Asst. Principal Susie Shepherd reported that things went very well on the first day for her school’s students and staff. “I couldn’t believe it when we reached the end of the first day, everything went so smoothly.”

Similarly, Rosewood High School reported an “outstanding first day.” The staff noted that there were a couple of new policies for students that were explained, but the staff praised how the students accepted and adjusted to the new policy. Everything is going “marvelous.”

The one consistent remark was some students missed their bus on the first day, and there was some communications on what time the bus was scheduled to stop near their house.

Both Rosewood Middle and Rosewood High were down slightly in first day numbers as compared with last year, 561 versus 567 last year for the high school, and 420 versus 455 at the middle school. Rosewood Elementary, on the other hand, increased from 725 to 751 this year.
