Johnston bridges okay

8 August 2007 —The NC Department of Transportation assured Johnston County Commissioners Monday morning that bridges in the county are in good shape.

Two engineers appeared before the county commissioners during their regular monthly meeting to present proposed paving and secondary road improvement plans for the county. None of the proposals are in the Princeton area.

During the presentation, several of the commissioners voiced concerns of many about county bridges after the recent bridge collapse in Minnesota, and also in view of many reports of cuts in funding of the state’s highway system.

Division Maintenance Engineer Bobby Lewis of Wilson responded that while DOT has experienced a number of cuts in recent years, no money has been taken out of bridge maintenance funds.

He noted that the US 70 business bridge over the Neuse River at Smithfield was scheduled for replacement, but that project has been pushed back until an extension of Booker Dairy Rd. was completed to provide a traffic alternative during the bridge replacement.
