OCTAVIES BATTLE

Octavies Battle, 79, of Selma, died Thursday, July 31 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Born November 8, 1927 in Edgecombe County, he was a son of the late John Henry and Beulah Worsley Battle. He was the widower of Hattie Mae Freeman Battle. Mr. Battle was retired from J.R. Flowers Well Digging Co.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon, August 6, at McKinnie Memorial and Bailey Funeral Home, Selma. Bishop Robert O’Neal officiated. Burial followed in Selma Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are two sons, Timothy Battle of Selma and William Battle of Princeton; a daughter, Mary Holder of Selma; a brother, Sylvester Battle of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Minnie Williams and Mammie Smith of Maryland and Mary Bryant of Princeton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

DEBRA WARD

Debra Lynette Ward, 53, of LaGrange, died Thursday, August 2 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Debra was born in Mecklenburg County on Oct. 18, 1953. She was employed with Goldsboro Milling Company for over nine years, where she was a truck driver.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth Ward Jr. of Goldsboro; three daughters, Tesa Atkinson and Brandy Ward both of Goldsboro and Cathy McGowan of Greenville; and three grandchildren, Jose Ward, E’Lexius Atkinson and Carlos Atkinson.

Debra was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Gaskins.

The family received friends on Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory.
