Board getting to work on paving

8 August 2007 — Street paving was on the minds of many of the candidates for the Princeton Town Board, as evidenced in their campaign opening statements, and on the minds of the sitting board Monday night.

At the end of Monday’s meeting, Commissioner Billy Sutton asked what progress the town could make on paving the large number of streets needing resurfacing.

Commissioner Walter Martin went further, saying with the large number of streets cut up with the water and sewer projects in recent months and in the future, it would be some time before the town would be able to get many streets fixed. He reiterated his call for a bond issue to address streets. He suggested they might want to put that on the ballot this fall.

Mayor Don Rains responded that preparing for a bond issue would take many months.

Commissioner Eddie Haddock said they would have water improvement bids going out next month, and more streets would be cut up when that work was done.

Mr. Haddock said he would have bids ready for this year’s paving next month. The Powell Bill money the town will be using will be paving three to four blocks in town, mostly in the West First St. and James St. area, as those are not expecting to see future water and sewer work. The $90,000 available to cover the costs represents five to seven years of accumulated Powell Bill money.
