JCC's Dollars for Books gala

5 September 2007 — The Johnston Community College Foundation is preparing to host its third annual Dollars for Books gala on Thursday, Sept. 13 at the Smithfield home of Allen and Cissie Wellons. Proceeds from the event will provide funds for students to secure loans to purchase textbooks and supplies for their classes.

While tuition for a 12-hour course load at JCC costs about $500, students typically spend about $400 per semester on books or $80 to $100 per book.

In an effort to relieve this out-of-pocket expense, the College Foundation has established a student emergency book loan fund, which provides monies to help students pay for textbooks.

Linda Hartsfield is studying to become a nursing student at JCC. Hartsfield said the emergency book loan fund helped her pay for $800 in textbook costs for two semesters.

“Without the emergency loan, I wouldn’t have been able to continue my education,” Hartsfield said. “I did not anticipate textbooks to be so expensive, but because of the emergency loan I was able to purchase the books I needed for my classes.”

“Even though I had to repay the money, it still took a great deal of stress off me at that time,” she added.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature food provided by Casey’s Floral and Catering.

Sponsorship levels are as follows: hard cover book, $300; soft cover book, $200; paperback book, $100. Each sponsorship level admits two to the gala. To attend the gala only, participants may contribute $75 per couple or $40 per individual. For more information, contact Judy Miller at 209.2115 or any member of the gala committee.
