Late-game defense not enough to conquer Wildcats
5 September 2007 — Rosewood dug a hole early Friday night at Hobbton, but played the Wildcats fairly even the rest of the way in a 42-21 loss.

Hobbton put together an impressive opening drive and broke a couple of big pass plays. The drive ended with a first Hobbton touchdown.
Rosewood fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and that put his defense back out on the field. They soon gave up another touchdown.
On the next two Eagle possessions, quarterback Sean Cornman overshot a receiver on a pass that got tipped up and eventually intercepted. On the next RHS possession, under pressure and going down, Cornman tried to flip the ball out to a receiver only to see a Wildcat linebacker pick it off and go for a fourth Hobbton TD.
Within about four minutes, Hobbton had put up 28 points.
Cornman answered with a short run in the second quarter to put Rosewood on the scoreboard.
Cornman also hit for several long passes in the game. Seniors Taylor Allen and Stephen McIntyre each had 50-yard receptions, and senior Holt Rains had a 43-yard reception late in the game.
Junior Eric Martel and Cornman each scored on short runs in the fourth quarter.
Cornman hit on a 22 yard pass to Josh Holmes to get the ball down to the Wildcat 10, but time expired before the Eagles could get another play off. The Eagles also had an earlier drive end on downs in Wildcat territory.
Coach Bobby Britt said Monday his defense played well in the second quarter, but Hobbton again came out strong in the third quarter and put up two scoring drive.
Again, in the fourth quarter, the Eagle defense kept the Wildcats out of the end zone.
Coach Britt also noted that Hobbton was able to block a punt and recovered to set up their offense on the Eagle 20. The Rosewood defense denied the Wildcats a score on that possession, despite the short field.
He was particularly pleased with how well his defense ran containment, the play of his two inside linebackers, Robert Franks and David Templeton, and Johnny Artis up front.
He also praised his offense. “Our offensive line played well for us to move it as well as we did against Hobbton.” Josh Holmes’ hard running, and Cornman’s sprint outs, many times after finding receivers covered were also cited.

Cornman got banged up and sat out a play or two, but he went back in and finished up the game. Other than some bruises, the coach expects everyone to be back and 100% on Friday, except for Chris Hare. The senior who was last year’s leading tackler has been trying to play through a foot injury, but a more thorough exam indicated a fracture, and Coach Britt does not know when he will be able to play.
Friday the Eagles are back on the road, this time at Roanoke Rapids.
The Jackets struggled in a shoot-out with Southeast Halifax Friday, falling 36-27. The loss left them at 2-1 on the young season.
The Jackets have a new coach, but a veteran. Coach Britt says they may give his defense a lot of trouble, as he is trying to simplify his defense against a team that throws a lot of formations at you.
Rosewood is now 1-2 for the year.
