Pfeiffer moves to finalist round

12 September 2007 — Wayne Community College nursing instructor Patricia Ann “Patty” Pfeiffer is now one of five finalists for the 2007 N.C. Community College System/RJ Reynolds Excellence in Teaching Award.

She was one of 10 instructors from the 58 community colleges in the state system to be named a semi-finalist this year. Following an interview by a panel of faculty and administrators from community colleges across the state, previous award winners and system staff, she was selected to go to the next level of competition.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, Mrs. Pfeiffer will be interviewed by a committee of the State Board of Community Colleges. The committee will select one instructor to be the Excellence in Teaching winner.

Mrs. Pfeiffer and the four other finalists will be recognized at the community college system's annual Day of Recognition program in Raleigh on November 16, at which time the winner will be announced.

The Excellence In Teaching Award winner will receive a cash award, plaque and statewide recognition. The winner’s college foundation also receives a cash prize. All other finalists will receive a smaller cash award, personal plaque, and college plaque.

The object of the state award is to identify and recognize NC community college faculty who have consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching to their students and college and who exemplify the highest quality and standards of the system.

In the 22 years that this award has been in existence, WCC has had a semi-finalist, nursing instructor Caroline Phillips in 2003, and a finalist, law enforcement training director Beverly Deans in 2002.

Mrs. Pfeiffer has taught nursing at the college since 1994. In addition to holding a bachelor’s degree in nursing and master’s degree in administration, she is a 1988 graduate of the WCC associate degree nursing program.

Mrs. Pfeiffer was awarded WCC’s 2007 George E. Wilson Excellence in Teaching Award during commencement ceremonies in May. That honor automatically made her the college's nominee for the system award.

Mrs. Pfeiffer lives in the Rosewood area of Wayne County with her husband Timothy and daughters Holly and April.
