Mayor investigates harassment charge

Princeton Mayor Don Rains said Monday morning that the allegations lodged against the Princeton Police Department at last Monday’s Town Board meeting do not represent the majority of the citizens of Princeton.

Mayor Rains said he met briefly with Debra Sutton after the board meeting, after Ms. Sutton had made allegations that police officers were harassing black citizens.

The mayor went on to say that he believes the police department is correctly doing its job and protecting all areas of the town.

Babysitting course

The American Red Cross will offer a Babysitter's Training Course on September 21 from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m., to teach first aid, common safety hazards, how to choose safe and age-appropriate toys, diapering, feeding, dressing, and how to interview for a job to potential babysitters. The class will be taught at the Red Cross building at 801 S. Third Street in Smithfield, and those who finish the course will be certified babysitters. Cost is $40, and those attending should bring a bagged lunch. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Call and pre-register early, as the class fills up quickly.

Book fair scheduled

Princeton School is kicking off their Fall Book Fair during the PTO Open House Monday night.

The Open House will begin with an assembly in the new gym at 7 p.m. before parents will then have an opportunity to meet and talk with their students’ teachers.

Families are encouraged to come at 6 p.m. for Family Night at the Book Fair. A variety of best selling student books will be offered, both hard and paperback.

The book fair was previewed with flyers on books to be offered, and classes will have scheduled times in the library to look at offerings. The library will be open before and after school all next week so students can buy and look some more, opening at 7:40 and open until 3:30.

Free seminar on grant writing

The Wayne Community College Business and Industry Center will offer the free seminar “Introduction to Grant Writing for Non-Profits” 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25 in Room 101 of the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro. The presenter is Dorothy Moore, WCC grants development coordinator. She has been writing grants for non-profits for more than four years.
