Moccasin Creek tax relief
10 October 2007 — In November 1995, a special taxing district was established for the sole purpose of providing maintenance for the Moccasin Creek channel and its laterals. The tax is based on the value of all real property within the Drainage District.
The tax rate that was established in 1995 was $.04 per $100 assessed value. In May 2004, the Service District Board presented an official request to the Tax Office and the Johnston County Board of Commissioners to lower the tax rate by $.01 per $100 assessed value for Fiscal Year 2005. This request was approved and resulted in a new tax rate of $.03 per $100 assessed value.
The Moccasin Creek District Board met on March 8, 2007. After carefully reviewing and assessing the maintenance needs of the Moccasin Creek channel and its laterals, the District Board voted unanimously to once again lower the tax rate by $.01 per $100 assessed value for citizens within the Moccasin Creek taxing district. The new tax rate will be $.02 per $100 assessed value.
The decision to lower the tax rate was based on growing property values in the District and the management of a progressive Board. The District is governed by five board members. All members must reside in the District. These board members serve on a voluntary basis and receive no financial compensation or benefits of any kind. It is the goal of the Moccasin Creek Service District Board to maintain the Moccasin Creek channel and its laterals in the best condition possible for the tax dollars spent.
If you have questions or you want to see how the Service District Board operates, attend one of their regular meetings held on the second Thursday of each month. Watch your local paper for announcements of the meetings.
