INEZ J. ARTHUR
Inez Johnson Arthur, 90, of Princeton, died Sunday afternoon, September 30, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Born March 3, 1917 in Johnston County to the late John L. and Mary Lambert Johnson, she was the widow of Acy J. Arthur, who died October 10, 1988. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jamie L. Arthur. Mrs. Arthur taught fifth grade at Princeton School for 26 years, retiring in 1979, and was a member of the Princeton Chapter #364 Order of the Eastern Star and the Princeton United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were conducted at 7:00 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday) in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Dennis Pollock and the Rev. Allen Strickland officiating. The family received friends immediately following the service. The burial will be at 11:00 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Princeton Cemetery.
Surviving are her daughter, Rosa Arthur Aycock and husband Ray of Princeton; two sons, John Arthur and wife Gail of Littleton and James Arthur and wife Lois of Princeton; a sister, Bernice Jones of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.

AGNES A. BATTEN
Agnes Aycock Batten, 88, died Sunday, September 30 at The Sterling House of Goldsboro.
Born in Johnston County on July 15, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lala Edwards Aycock and was married to the late J. H. "Buck" Batten. A member of First Baptist Church and the Frances Greene Sunday school class, she and her husband owned and operated the Westover Grocery in the Rosewood Community for more than 30 years.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Batten is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Mac Allen of Goldsboro, Golda and Tommy Steele of Siler City, Janice and Willie Horne of Manteo, Evelyn and Jimmy Martin of South Hill, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Pat Batten of Kernersville and Dudley; a brother, Thomas Aycock of Selma; sisters, Blanche House of Selma, Pearl Wells of Smithfield, Edith Pittman of Kenly, Marjorie Daughtry of Princeton, Mary Ellis of Pine Level and Harlene Sasser of Pinkney; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

RUDY BEST
David Rudolph "Rudy" Best, 66, of Rosewood, died Saturday, September 29, at the home of his son.
Rudy was born on January 2, 1941, in Wilson County to the late Rudolph Best and Bertha Privette Best. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a retired car salesman. Rudy was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held yesterday (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Vernon Braswell and Thurman Horney officiating. Burial followed at Wayne Memorial Park.
Rudy is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David Timothy and Lisa Best of Goldsboro; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Patsy and Tony Coble of Goldsboro and Linda and Maurice DuBois of Goldsboro; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Donny and Jerrie Best of Greenville and Edgar and Linda Best of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Candice Best, Casey Best and Jessica Grant; his great-granddaughter, Sydney Cloutier; and a number of nieces and nephews.

MINNIE S. HILL
Minnie Smith Hill, 81, of Stantonsburg, died suddenly on Monday, October 1 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Minnie was born in Johnston County on April 1, 1926 to the late Nick Smith and Virginia Mitchell Smith. She was a member of Yelverton United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Along with her husband, they owned and operated Hill's Grocery Store in Faro. Minnie had also volunteered as a 4-H leader.
Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Moser officiating. Burial will follow in Eureka Cemetery.
Minnie is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, James Irwin "Irvin" Hill; her son, James Dennis Hill and wife, Peggy, of Stantonsburg; her daughters, Donna H. Cuthbertson and husband, Barry, of Belize, Central America, Terri H. Ervin and husband, Dean, of Grifton; her grandchildren, Holly Lutze, Lisa West and husband, Brian, T.J. Hill, Dennis Hill Jr., Stewart Ervin Jr. and wife, Lindsey, Justin Ervin and Jeremy Ervin; and her great-grandchildren, Matthew Lutze and Colby Ervin. She is also survived by her brothers, Ray Smith and wife, Blois, of Princeton and Buck Smith and wife, Ginny, of Princeton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lillie Mae Edwards; and her brothers, Dock Smith, Willie Smith and Nick Smith Jr.
The family received friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at her home, 778 Herman Lane Road, Stantonsburg.
MITCHELL K. LINDSAY
Mitchell Keith Lindsay, 59, of Clinton, died at his home Saturday, September 29.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 3 at 2 p.m. at the Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Clinton, with the Rev. Michael Shook officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery, Delway.
Born in 1947 in Sampson County, Mr. Lindsay was the son of the late Egbert Newton and Mary Marshburn Lindsay. He was affiliated with Evergreen Baptist Church, a graduate of Campbell University and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany. He was employed by NuWay Speaker Products, Inc. as an industrial mechanic. He was the widower of Judy Wilson Lindsay.
He is survived by a son, Jason Keith Lindsay of Raleigh; four sisters, Geneva Lindsay Adams of Thomaston, Ga., Doris Lindsay Wade of Morehead City, Judy Lindsay Lewis of Princeton, and Joan Readling of Hickory; four brothers, Elmon Lindsay, Franklin Lindsay, Jesse Lindsay, all of Clinton, and Glenn Lindsay of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Lindsay Barwick and Edna Lindsay Jones.

CARL MILLARD JR.
Carl Milton Millard Jr., 74, of Rosewood, died Monday, September 24.
Mr. Millard was born in Wayne County on March 16, 1933 to the late Carl Milton Millard Sr. and Mary Kathleen Hinson Millard. He graduated from Goldsboro High School and was a Korean War Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church and was the ALC coordinator at Princeton School. He previously worked with Music & Sports and was past owner and operator of Team Sports.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 27 at 4 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, Highway 581 in Rosewood. The Rev. Billy Olsen and Dr. Curtis Rains officiated. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Amelia "Mimi" Millard; three sons, Carl Michael Millard and his wife, Connie, Phillip Randall Millard and his wife, Heather, and Charles Banks Millard and his wife, Lisa, all of Goldsboro; three brothers, Lloyd Millard and his wife, Pat, William Millard and his wife, Virginia, and Dan Millard and his wife, Sharon, all of Goldsboro; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Gurley and her husband, R.L., of Goldsboro; and six grandchildren, Nicole, Meghan, Katie, Abby, Steven and Phillip Millard.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Hinson Millard and a daughter, Catherine Gayle Millard.

CLARA K. TAYLOR
Clara Kornegay Taylor, 72, of Glen Cove, New York, formerly of Pikeville, died suddenly Sunday, September 30 at North Shore Hospital.
Born on June 6, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Sarah Harper Kornegay. She attended school at Pikeville Training School in Pikeville. She relocated to New York in 1956, where she met and married Arthur Taylor.
Funeral service will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church in Glen Cove, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Taylor; a brother, Joseph Kornegay; a son, Linwood Kornegay; and a sister, Margaret Mosley, who died on August 21 of this year.
She is survived by two daughters, Belinda Kornegay of Fremont and Audrey Taylor of Smyrna, Ga.; one son, Arnold Taylor, of the home; one brother, James Kornegay of Jamaica, N.Y.; four sisters, Annie K. Mitchell of Bronx, N.Y., Mary K. Wester and husband, Charles, of Princeton, Shirley K. Sykes of Goldsboro, and Alma K. Sanders of Fremont; eight grandchildren, including Jacovi Bonnie, whom she reared; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

GRACE G. WILLIFORD
Mrs. Grace Gurley Williford, 76, of Goldsboro, died Friday, September 28 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Grace was born in Johnston County on April 22, 1931, to the late W. Herman Gurley and Flossie Daughtry Gurley. For over 30 years, she worked in senior management at East Coast Federal Savings and Loan, now known as Branch Bank and Trust Company.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 1 at 2 p.m. at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, with Dr. Talmage Williams officiating. Burial followed at Hepzibah Baptist Church Cemetery in Princeton.
Grace is survived by her husband, Aaron Williford; her daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda W. and Cecil Davis Jr. of Raleigh and Terry W. and Raymond Groseclose of Asheboro; and her special grandsons, Austin Davis, Brett Davis, Jordan Groseclose and Graham Groseclose. She is also survived by her brothers, James Alton Gurley and Ralph Gurley; her sisters, Linda King and Ruth Matthews; and several nieces and nephews.
