Princeton Veterans Day celebration plans
3 October 2007 — The Princeton Veterans Day Committee is pleased to announce plans for its 5th annual Veterans Day Celebration on Saturday, November 10, 2007 in downtown Princeton. Scheduled events include entertainment on the Edwards Street Stage from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy The Atkinsons from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Princeton Community Ensemble from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and Roby Huffman and the Bluegrass Cutups from 12:00 Noon until 1:30 pm. Performances by Tippy Toes Dance Studio and various karaoke vocalists will also be featured. Following the entertainment, a parade will be held honoring all veterans at 2:00 p.m. with World War II veteran Delton Toler serving as Grand Marshall.
At 3:00 p.m. a grandstand event will be held at the Edwards Street Stage with Wayne Peedin, Assistant Director NC Veterans Affairs Office acting as Master of Ceremonies. Keynote speakers will be Colonel Richard J. Torres, Commander 2174th Garrison Support Unit in Salem, Virginia and his sister Colonel Joan Marie Torres Williams, Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer, North Carolina 81st RRC in Raleigh, North Carolina. Colonel Torres is a highly decorated veteran who has received numerous military awards as an active duty United States Army officer, United States Army Reserve officer and National Guard officer including the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak leaf clusters over the last twenty years. A commissioned officer for more than 20 years, Colonel Williams has served in her present position as Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer since July 1, 2007. Her various military awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak leaf cluster.
Throughout the day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the public will be able to enjoy concessions, games, and arts and crafts provided by numerous vendors. Available free services include information and free blood pressure checks by the Princeton Rescue Squad. There will be a school contest display located in the Princeton Community Building at 108 North Center Street and a military memorabilia display at 114 South Center Street. Participation forms are available at the Princeton Town Hall and Holt True Value. Any veteran that has not previously signed up to be on the Veteran’s Roll of Honor may do so at the Town Hall or Holt True Value or by calling 936-3042. The Princeton Veterans Day Committee is dedicated to honoring all Veterans by hosting this annual celebration and by erecting a Veterans Memorial in Princeton. The Princeton Veterans Day Celebration is sponsored in part by the Johnston County Tourism Authority.
