N. Duplin takes early lead over PHS, 33-13

17 October 2007 — Princeton Coach Russell Williamson was praising North Duplin after the Rebels dealt the Bulldogs a 33-13 loss at ND Friday night.

“They’re very good,” he said Monday morning.

What was good for the Princeton faithful was how hard the Bulldogs played against the undefeated Rebels.

Princeton was down 27-0 at the half, but held ND to only one TD in the final two quarters, and put up two of their own in the fourth to make the score respectable. The Bulldog defense never gave up the really long touchdown either, with a 19-yard pass being the longest scoring play of the night.

The Rebels effectively shut down the Princeton running game. After gaining 164 yards and scoring two touchdowns two weeks ago, and gaining 229 yards and scoring four touchdowns last week, Kevin Foy was trapped time and again behind the line of scrimmage, netting a minus 37 yards on ten attempts and no scores. Benton Myers led Princeton with 30 yards on five attempts.

With the running game denied and behind big on the scoreboard, the Bulldogs went to full passing mode. Dylan Myers fired up 28 aerials, with Dillon Daughtry successfully on the receiving end for nine of those, netting 81 yards. “Our QB (D. Myers) probably had to ice down his arm (after the unusually numerous passing attempts),” Coach Williamson said.

Coach Williamson praised his offensive line’s pass blocking. He noted they only gave up one sack on the night despite the many passing attempts.

Early in the fourth quarter, he connected with Matt Williamson for a seven-yard touchdown. Dylan Myers also scored on a four-yard run midway through the quarter.

“We competed well. Our kids didn’t quit after getting behind in the first half. They’re trying to get better.”

The Bulldogs are likely to get a pretty good reading on how much better they are this Friday as the travel to North Johnston. The Panthers had been expected to be one of the top tier teams in the conference, but a rash of injuries has hurt them in recent weeks. They pulled out a 29-26 win at Rosewood Friday night to even their conference mark at 1-1, and 5-3 in all games.

While the film from Friday night did not show the strong running game the Panthers have had much of the season with their top runner out, what the Princeton coach did see scared him. “When they go to a spread offense and stretch the field, that scares me.”

Friday’s loss evened Princeton’s conference record at 1-1, while they are 2-6 in all games.
