Panthers scratch out narrow win over RHS, 29-26

17 October 2007 — After a confidence-sapping 52-0 loss to Ayden-Grifton the week before, a suddenly confident Rosewood squad pushed ahead of North Johnston in front of the Eagle fans, 26-14, at the start of the fourth quarter Friday night.

The Panthers rallied for two  touchdowns in the next eight minutes and then held off a final Rosewood drive to snatch a 29-26 win.

After giving up two early touchdowns, Rosewood quarterback Sean Cornman rallied Rosewood in the second quarter with two touchdown passes to Joseph Willis, who started in the place of injured receiver Stephen McIntyre.

The eight-yard and 21-yard TD passes got the Eagles within 14-12 of NJ. Senior David Templeton had a big interceptions just before the half that set up Rosewood deep in NJ territory. With less than a minute left Cornman called his own number, getting loose on a seven yard run around right end for the score. That put Rosewood up, 19-14, at the halftime break.

The two teams failed to score in the third quarter, but Eric Martel gave the Eagles a seeming winning score on a six-yard TD run with 10:43 left in the game, and posted them to a 26-14 lead.

From there the NJ QB went to work, hitting a 30-yard TD pass to get the visitors within distance. After the Panther defense forced the ball back from the Eagles, he drove his team back down the field, hitting a ten-yard attempt with 2:40 left. With a two-point conversion, the Panthers had a 29-26 edge.

Cornman answered with a drive, hitting on five passes, four to tight end Holt Rains. Time expired after a unsuccessful final pass to Rains in the end zone.

Cornman hit on 14 of 20 passing attempts, good for 155 yards on the night. He also ran for 115 yards on 25 carries.

Sunday coach Bobby Britt was talking about a number of changes which they made to help turn things around Friday night.

“We went into last week as a team, together. We met with the seniors and they had some suggestions. We had a good week of practice. We changed the pre-game schedule to get more fire in the kids, more focus, more intensity.”

Coach Britt complimented the two late NJ drives. “The one play was a terrific throw and catch, and the other was on another good play.”

He acknowledged his team’s effort, and how they could have won it at the end. “We played with a lot of heart and integrity.

While also acknowledging the fine game from his quarterback, he praised his offensive line, with their pass blocking adding confidence to the passing game, and their sustaining blocks on the running game better.

He noted Joseph Willis’ big contributions coming off the bench.

On defense he noted that Brandon Dean had a solid game, along with Robert Franks, Johnny Artis and Rains. Templeton’s interception was big in helping Rosewood really capture momentum just before the half.

The Eagles entertain Spring Creek Friday night. The Gators are winless in eight games and are coming off a 64-7 loss to Ayden-Grifton.

Coach Britt isn’t taking the cross-county rivals lightly and believes their coach will have them pumped up for the game.
