Rebels frustrate Eagles to take lead, 48-7
31 October 2007 — Rosewood Coach Bobby Britt wanted to take away North Duplin’s big running back Saturday night, and he felt good about how his team worked on that aspect of the game.
Problem was North Duplin made Rosewood pay with their pass offense, as the Rebels rolled to a 48-7 win over the Eagles at ND.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Rebs kept Rosewood’s offense frustrated for most of the night.
Sunday night Coach Bobby Britt was talking about field position. The Eagles’ starting punter, Chris Hare, was out with a season-ending injury from the week before, and North Duplin was operating in Rosewood territory most of the night.
“That helped to give them the confidence to go for it on 3rd and long and 4th down, which they did several times successfully.” North Duplin only punted once on the night.
When the Rosewood defense was able to put ND in a potential drive-ending situation, the Rebels were able to make the plays to keep it going.
ND led by 12-0 and 28-0 at the end of the first and second quarters.
Rosewood was not able to put together a sustained drive until late in the game when ND had made some substitutions on defense. Josh Holmes capped the drive with a three-yard exciting play that resulted in a touchdown.
At the two, a North Duplin tackler grabbed his face mask, and he lost the ball, but as Coach Britt described it, made a great play to jump on the ball in the end zone.
In addition to Hare, the Eagles were without Cody Richards who dislocated a finger during practice during the week, but Richards should be ready to play Friday against Princeton.
Coach Britt said the Rebel QB was hurting the defense, getting the ball on the perimeter of his defense, but they did a better job in the second half. “They really hurt us on defending the pass.”
Still, he liked the play of his defensive line. He cited the play of Trevor Morris, Johnny Artis, Stephen Ash, Joseph Person, Andre Everette and Holt Rains.
He also noted that Eric Jones played with a kidney stone, but played the whole game.
He also noted the play of Robert Franks, who was assigned as the spy on the big ND running back.
While he noted they made some good throws and catches and the running backs ran hard at times, they were not consistent enough.
Eric Martel led the Rosewood rushing attack with 24 yards on four carries.
Sean Cornman completed five of ten passing attempts for a net of 37 yards.
