Memorabilia display in store for Princeton Veterans Day

31 October 2007 — The Princeton Veterans Day  Committee is pleased to announce that they are sponsoring a Memorabilia Display for the fifth annual Veterans Day Celebration, to be held Saturday, November 10 in downtown Princeton. The display will be set up at 114 S. Center Street, part of the former Woodard Furniture Store. The Committee is asking veterans to drop off their memorabilia for display on Thursday, November 8 from 1-5 p.m. Veterans will need to pick their items up on Saturday, November 10 from 5-6 p.m.

The Committee will be sharing some of the memorabilia with the students at Princeton School on Friday, November 9. Veterans and active duty personnel will be in the library to speak with students and show the memorabilia. Participants will include Jesse Lewis, Don Martin, Trey Martin, Josh Raney, Raymond Sugg, Delton Toler, James Williams, and Effie Woodruff.

Delton Toler has also been selected as the Grand Marshal for the parade and celebration. Mr. Toler is a World War II veteran and a lifetime resident of Princeton. He went into the Army in 1945 and had 17 weeks of Infantry Basic Training at Camp Croft, South Carolina. Before his group could be sent overseas, the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Mr. Toler was sent to Giessen, Germany, to serve as part of a security force at a German air base. After a year, Mr. Toler was sent to Bremerhaven, Germany to head home. During this time, Mr. Toler met Roy Tannis from Pennsylvania, with whom he has corresponded and remained friends for 62 years.

Mr. Toler is married to Betty Johnson Toler and has three daughters, Terri Sutton and Kay Radford of Princeton, and Dale Mace of Dunn, along with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Atkinsons will perform from 9:45-10:45 a.m., and Roby Huffman and the Bluegrass Cutups from noon to 1:30 p.m. Special performances by the Princeton Community Ensemble will start at 11 a.m., with Tippy Toes Dance Studio students and various featured vocalists. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., a grandstand event will be held at the Edwards Street stage with keynote speakers Colonel Richard J. Torres, Commander 2174th Garrison Support Unit in Salem, Virginia, and his sister, Colonel Joan Marie Torres Williams, Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer, North Carolina 81st RRC in Raleigh. Colonel Torres is a highly decorated veteran who has received numerous military awards as an active duty United States Army officer, United States Army Reserve officer, and National Guard officer, including the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters over the last twenty years. A commissioned officer for more than 20 years, Colonel Williams has served in her present position as Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer since July 1. Her various military awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster.

The Princeton Veterans Day Committee is dedicated to honoring all veterans by hosting this annual celebration and by erecting a Veterans Memorial in Princeton. The Princeton Veterans Day Celebration is sponsored in part by the Johnston County Tourism Authority.
