Fines for Princeton water hogs

31 October 2007 — Princeton Mayor Don Rains said Monday that the town will consider implementing fines for repeaters who violate restrictions on watering lawns, and possibly washing cars when the town board meets November 5.

The dire water conditions are continuing to threaten local water supplies, and even with last week’s rains, conditions continue to be severe.

“I am attending a regional meeting Tuesday in Raleigh to discuss what we can do,” Mayor Rains said Monday.

He noted that Raleigh is looking for other sources of water. The Neuse River has been Raleigh’s primary source, but with others downstream also dependent on the river, they must find other sources.

While the mayor noted that as much as 35% of water usage in some areas has been for lawns, he knows Princeton residents have not used anywhere near that percentage. Still, he says the town must do what they can to conserve and do their part.
