Student Ambassadors help Habitat

7 November 2007 — The Student Ambassadors at Johnston Community College recently teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Johnston County for the second straight year to help build a home in Benson.

The 14 students and two advisors braved the heat and dug trenches, hung vinyl siding, framed the interior and installed the roof on the Ryals Street home, which is sponsored by Ruby Wood.

“At the end of day, it was nice to see such an accomplishment, something we helped make possible,” said Ashlee Watson, a second-year student who plans to transfer to a four-year college next year. “This is the second house we have teamed up with Habitat to build and it has been fun.”

“We have learned a lot about Habitat and about each other,” added Thomas Dean, advisor for the group. “Everyone here has a great work ethic.”

Student ambassadors receive scholarships from the College Foundation and represent the College and College Foundation at various special events as well as perform a community service project.

The house is slated to be finished before the end of the year. If anyone is interested in volunteering services, money, or other support for the Habitat project, please contact Ned Walsh at (919) 934-9331.
