7 November 2007 — Rosewood Middle School students won awards for their essay and poster contest entries.


Princeton election results

6 November 2007 — Results are in on the Princeton Board election, and the citizens' votes on the land transfer and sales tax.

Walter Martin - 100 votes
Brandon Holland - 92 votes
Eddie Haddock - 79 votes
David Holt - 74 votes
Lisa Floors Brown - 74 votes
Gregory Collins - 57 votes

Mayor Donald Rains, who ran unopposed, received 183 votes. 13 votes were given to write-in candidates.

63 votes were in favor of the land transfer tax, while an overwhelming 375 were against. Similarly, only 65 votes were in favor of the sales tax, with 367 against.


sheriff's report

Two Neuse River area residents were charged by Johnston County Sheriff’s deputies with possession and distribution of meth chemicals Thursday night.

Sterling Trejo, 19, of 116 Crabapple Ln. was charged with six counts of possession and distribution of precursor chemicals and one count of exceeding pseudo limits. Bond was set at $251,000.

Timothy Rains, 42, of Old Smithfield Rd., was also charged with possession and distribution of precursor chemicals and exceeding pseudo limits. Bond was set at $51,000.

In other reports, James Pearce of Progressive Church Road reported Tuesday the theft of a belt sander, edge sander, two TVs, a rifle, pistol, two shotguns, a fax machine, CD player and a Playstation. Total value was $13,775.

Russell Lee Capps reported Friday the theft of a Glock pistol, 2 backpacks and tennis shoes taken from his truck parked at his home.


princeton police report

A Princeton teen was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly tried to rob another Princeton man with a gun.

Benjamin Hoaghin of Madison Ave., Princeton contacted police just after 8 p.m. after he said a man tried to rob him, telling him he had a gun, near the corner of N. Pine and W. Railroad. Mr. Hoaghin said he informed the attacker he was a fourth degree black belt, assumed the stance, and the attacker fled.

Based upon testimony, Princeton Police began searching for Timothy Sanders, 18, of Powell St., Princeton. His mother drove him to the police department, where he was held for an identification.

He was later arrested and charged with common law robbery. Bond was set at $20,000.


Kevin Moore's first sermon this weekend

The Pastor, officers, and entire family of First African Baptist Church of Goldsboro invite the community to the initial sermon of Brother Kevin Moore, which will be given this Saturday, November 10, at 4 p.m. The occasion is "Fulfilling Our Purpose in Our 143rd Year of Worship." Kevin is the son of Charles and Carolyn Moore of Princeton, and a 2001 graduate of Princeton High School. He is a 2005 graduate of Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall.


British, Europeans invited

Any British or other European transplants are invited to bring their country's flags and march in Goldsboro's Veteran's Day Parade. Bring your flag to Center Street in downtown Goldsboro on Monday, November 12 at 11 a.m. to participate. For more information, call 736-7711 or 734-9206.


Princeton art on display

The art of Princeton School students will be on display at the Johnston Memorial Hospital Pediatrics Unit through November 30.

Since its inception in 1996, this bi-monthly exhibit has provided local students a venue to display their work publicly, while offering patients, parents, hospital staff, and visitors the opportunity to experience the healing power of art. Each art show spotlights a different Johnston County School and is displayed on a two-month exhibition cycle.

Stuff-A-Stocking program

The Salvation Army is preparing for their Christmas program again this year. Stuff-a-Stockings (24-inch red mesh stockings) will be ready for pickup on October 24 at the Salvation Army building, 610 N. William Street, Goldsboro. Any group or organization may fill them.

Each year, the Salvation Army distributes over 1,500 stockings to needy children. Please return the filled stocking to the Salvation Army no later than December 5.


Festival of Trees

Keep Johnston County Beautiful, Inc., a non-profit organization, is planning its fourth annual “Festival of Trees” to be held November 29 – December 9, 2007 at the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield.  This year’s theme is “A Johnston County Christmas” where approximately 60 decorated NC grown Fraser firs will be on display for the public to enjoy at no charge.   Entertainment is scheduled for the 2007 Festival of Trees at various times throughout the week.  If you our your group would like to perform in this year’s Festival of Trees, please contact Mary Britt at 934-6276 or email her at MWBritt@aol.com no later than October 31, 2007.  Church choirs, youth choruses, school bands, soloists, duets, and groups are welcome to perform.  


Clayton lining up parade

The Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking participants for the 2007 Clayton Christmas Parade, scheduled for Saturday, December 8th, at 3 p.m. in downtown Clayton.

Area businesses, churches, schools, and civic and other community organizations are welcome to participate in the parade. Groups may march along the parade route or enter a vehicle in the parade. Float entry fees are $60 for Pageant Queens and Kings and non-profit organizations, $70 for Clayton Area Chamber Members and $110 for Non-Chamber Members. Churches may enter a vehicle at no charge.

Parade sponsorships also are available for $200 (Gold) and $100 (Silver). Sponsorships allow the Chamber to include area marching bands and groups such as the Sudan Clowns, Amran ragtops and others in the parade.
