JANIE M. BRASWELL
Janie Lee McLamb Braswell of Rosewood died Wednesday, October 31 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Braswell was born in Wayne County on October 31, 1934, to the late Isom D. McLamb and Leacy Hardison McLamb. She was married to the late Reginald Braswell Sr.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 2 at 1 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas McLendon and the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Braswell is survived by her sons, Reggie Braswell and wife, Benita, of Rosewood, Jerry Braswell and wife, Panis, of Princeton; her sister, Christine Wallace of Princeton; her grandchildren, Michele Braswell of Rosewood, Shaun Braswell and wife, Shelly, of Greenville, Jerica Torres of Live Oak, Fla., and Lee Braswell of Princeton; her step-grandchildren, Dee Tilghman and wife, Kimberly, of Smithfield, Melody Driver and husband, John, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Joni Page of Dudley; her great-grandchildren, Avery and Hayden Braswell of Greenville, Taylor and Kelan Torres of Live Oak, Fla.; and her step-great-grandchildren, Alex and Hunter Driver of Kennesaw, Ga., Hunter and Justin Tilghman of Smithfield, Austin and Summer Page of Dudley.
WILLIAM F. BURGESS, Sr.
William Fletcher Burgess, Sr. 92, of Princeton, died Tuesday afternoon, November 6, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Born September 28, 1915 in Johnston County to the late James Robert and Druzilla Holloman Burgess, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rochelle Stephenson Burgess. A US Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, he was a member of the Pine Level VFW. He was a former member of the Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church and presently an active member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served on the Administrative Board Council.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 9 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with the Rev. Rose Hicks and the Rev. Billie Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollwood Memorial Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Sally Wortham Burgess; sons, Bill Burgess and wife Carol of Selma and Duke Burgess and wife Teresa of Wake Forest; daughters, Marvel Dixon and husband Roy of Clayton and Jane Burgess of Surf City; stepson, Edward Wade of Gloucester, VA; stepdaughter, Beckie Daniels and husband Marvin of La Grange; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; eight step-great grandchildren; and two step great great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 3859 US 70 West, Goldsboro, NC 27530, or the Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church, P. O. Drawer C, Wilson’s Mills, NC 27593.
The family will receive friends from 7–9 p.m. Thursday, November 8 at the funeral home.

MARY CRUMPLER
Mary Crumpler, 87, of Selma, died Friday, November 2.
Born August 15, 1920, Mrs. Crumpler was a daughter of the late Edward and Ethel Hamilton Watson. She was the widow of Charles Leroy "Roy" Crumpler. Mrs. Crumpler was a member of Selma Presbyterian Church. She worked at Ideal Cleaners for many years, and later at Jerold Manufacturing.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, November 4, at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery in Selma.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Jensen of Four Oaks; a sister, Cora Lee Worley of Princeton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Gretchen Askew Evans
Gretchen Askew Evans of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Rosewood, died Tuesday, October 23 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice Center.
She was born in Wayne County to the late Alvin R. Askew and Irene Best Askew. Gretchen was a graduate of East Carolina University and was a school teacher for many years.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, November 9 at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel in Goldsboro with her nephew, Rev. Rex Evans, officiating. The family will greet friends following that service at the funeral home.
Gretchen is survived by her husband, Percy F. Evans of the home, her son, Joey Darwin “J.D.” Evans and his wife, Michele of Las Vegas, NV; her grandchildren, Ashley, Ryan, Joe and Jack; her sister, Hilda Witherington and husband, Wilbur of Goldsboro; and her brother, George Askew and wife, Charlotte of Evergreen, AL. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Leslie R. “Red” Thompson of Goldsboro; her sister-in-law, Jean S. Askew of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Thompson and her brother, Melvin Askew.
Memorials in Gretchen’s memory may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice, 3391 N. Buffaloe Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89129 or the charity of one’s choice.

L. WAYNE GURLEY
L. Wayne Gurley, 59, of Goldsboro, died Monday, November 5 at his home.
Born August 1, 1948 in Wayne County, Mr. Gurley was a son of Victoria Lynch Gurley and the late Eugene Gurley. He was a driver with Pope Transport.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 7 at Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, with the Revs. Kelvin Gurley and Mike Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Overbee family cemetery.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 25 years, Charlene Howell Gurley; a son, the Rev. Kelvin Wayne Gurley of Grantham; a daughter, Katrina Kornegay of Rosewood; three sisters, Peggy Warrick of Fremont, Shirley Burgette of La Grange, and Faye Jackson of Goldsboro; two brothers, Ray Gurley of Princeton and Eugene Gurley Jr. of Dudley; and five grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life, in care of Sharon Howell, 3122 N.C. 111 North, Goldsboro, NC 27534.

WILLIAM 'BILL' SCHAAP
William "Bill" Charles Schaap, 73, of Goldsboro, died Friday, November 2 at his residence.
Born in Melbourne, Fla. on November 8, 1933, he was the son of the late Ysbrand & Rebecca Bayless Schaap. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served for 21 years.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 9, at 11 a.m. at Seymour Johnson AFB Chapel. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mr. Schaap is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Schaap; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Ronald Peters of Princeton, Linda and Glenn Sergeant of Alamogordo, N.M.; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Harry Scott of Jacksonville, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Bekah Peters, Andrew Peters, David Sergeant, Ben Sergeant and Leah Sergeant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

WILLIAM M. TALTON
William Milas Talton, 49, of Goldsboro, died Friday, November 2.
A native of Wayne County, he was the son of Needham Preston Talton of Goldsboro and the late Otena Quinn Talton. He was a roofer with Wayne Roofing.
Graveside services were held Monday morning, November 5, at Wayne Memorial Park, with Rev. Willard Hardison officiating.
Surviving in addition to his father is a sister, Joan Osborne and husband, Joe, of Canal Winchester, Ohio ; brother, Roger Talton and wife, Julie, of LaGrange; and stepsister, Carol Bass of Princeton.
Mr. Talton is also survived by two half-brothers, James and Hardy Quinn; one half-sister, Mattie Quinn; nieces and nephews, Michael Osborne, Shana Osborne, Rusty Wiggins, Becky Tyndall and Lynn Smith; eight great-nieces; four great-nephews; and his special friends, Debbie and Miranda Hill.
Mr. Talton was preceded in death in addition to his mother by his stepmother, Georgia Ann Johnson Talton and stepsister, Betty Wiggins.
S. CLARENCE WOODARD
Stephen Clarence Woodard, 101, of Smithfield, died Friday, November 2.
Born May 2, 1906, in Johnston County, Mr. Woodard was a son of the late Stephen Etheridge and Martha Jane Atkinson Woodard. He was a 1928 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A longtime educator, he taught at Smithfield High School and Corinth High School. He was principal of Archer Lodge School and Princeton High School. While an educator, Mr. Woodard farmed in the Thanksgiving community, and he was a member of Thanksgiving Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
The funeral was held Monday morning, November 5, at First Baptist Church in Smithfield. The Rev. Lee Colbert officiated. Burial followed in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his son, Stephen Clarence Woodard Jr. of Four Oaks; a sister, Mary Talton of Smithfield; a brother, Joseph Perkins "J.P." Woodard of Nashville; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
The family suggests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church in Smithfield or Thanksgiving Baptist Church.
HESSIE PARRIS WYNN
Hessie Lucille Parris Wynn, 87, of Dudley, died Thursday, November 1 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 3 at 2 p.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro with the Rev. Dann Patrick officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Princeton.
Mrs. Wynn was born in Jackson County on March 23, 1920, to the late Lucius and Bertha Parris. She was a faithful member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church for 41 years.
She is survived by one son, Bobby Wynn of Dudley; one daughter-in-law, Gail Wynn of Goldsboro; one sister, Hollis Armstrong of Gastonia; a sister-in-law, Miza Parris of Lowell; and one grandson, Tony Wynn of Goldsboro.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wynn was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil A. Wynn; two sons, David Wynn and Jerry Wynn; two brothers and five sisters.
