New commissioner for Princeton board

14 November 2007 — Walter Martin was returned to the Princeton Town Board by voters last Tuesday, but Brandon Holland unseated Eddie Haddock for the other town board seat decided by voters.

Don Rains was returned by voters as the town’s mayor. Mr. Rains ran unopposed, but 13 write-in votes were cast.

In the two county referendum on new taxes, Princeton voters sided with all others across the state voting on enabling their county commissioners to levy a land transfer tax or a sales tax increase. The land transfer vote went down in the North Boon Hill precinct, 375 against and only 63 for. Similarly, local voters turned down a possible sales tax hike by a 367 to 65 margin.

Mr. Martin was the top vote getter, with 100 votes. Mr. Holland had 92 votes, and Mr. Haddock finished third with 79 votes. Lisa Floors Brown and David Holt tied with 74 votes apiece, and Greg Collins had a respectable 57 votes.

Mr. Martin was returned for his third four-year term on the Princeton Town Board. Mr. Haddock was unsuccessful in his bid for a fifth four-year term. Mr. Holland was elected in his first bid for elected office.

Mr. Martin commented Monday, “I’m overjoyed that the people showed the confidence in me that they did.”

He was disappointed that Mr. Haddock was not re-elected, as he believes the town will miss his knowledge and service, but he looks forward to working with Mr. Holland.

“There’s no doubt that Brandon’s perseverance paid dividends. A lot of people have faith in him.”
