New stop signs for railroad crossings
14 November 2007 — If you were driving down Center Street or Barden Street recently and while crossing the railroad tracks, were embarrassed to suddenly see that you had run a stop sign that you didn’t remember being there, you aren’t the only one.
Police Chief Eddie Haddock reported that after discussions of improving safety at the two railroad crossings without crossing gates, he put up the stop signs at the intersections.
He related that he knew it would take some time for people to notice the signs, and that they would not begin to enforce the stop sign for 30 days.
Police Commissioner Walter Martin suggested that the chief also erect stop ahead signs to get additional notice for the new signs.
The board seemed very content to table the railroad crossing closing issue, following Mayor Don Rains’ suggestion. The mayor hinted that there could be additional incentives offered by the railroad. He also acknowledged the need for costly DOT work to improve storm drainage downtown, and how beneficial the grants could be.
As of Tuesday morning, the signs have been taken down until the stop ahead signs are put up. The sudden stops of those realizing the signs were up nearly caused some rear-end wrecks at the intersections.
