Williford takes win at Invitational

12 December 2007 — Princeton’s Josh Williford brought home fourth-place honors for his weight class from the Rosewood Eagle Invitational on Saturday.

Williford, who was the only place-winner from Princeton, snagged fourth on Saturday after winning three of five matches in the 215 division.

He started off the day with a quick first-round match, pinning his Edenton Holmes opponent in a mere 11 seconds. In the second round he defeated hosting Rosewood in 3:05. Williford was out of the championship brackets after his third match, losing by major decision to Charles B. Aycock. He won his next round by disqualification, and lost the match for third place against Millbrook, falling after 1:54.

Princeton also had a strong performance from Zach Stevens, who won matches in his first two rounds, but fell out of the running for a medal with two back-to-back losses.

Stevens (160) defeated Spring Creek in the first round with a pin in one minute, and was victorious in a match with North Pitt that went over five minutes.

Princeton finished at 15 in the 19 team tournament, with a team score of 43.

Earlier in the week, Princeton hosted Charles B. Aycock in a duals match. The Bulldogs secured wins in three of the 13 contested matches.

Josh Best (145) and Patrick Woodard (152) both earned hard-fought wins for Princeton. Best defeated Aycock’s James Jones with a pin after 5:13, and Woodard followed with a 5:26 victory over Ryan Butts.

Aycock won the match 62-15. The Bulldog’s next duals match at Rosewood, originally scheduled for this Wednesday, has been rescheduled for December 20.
