Neal top Rosewood placer at Eagle Invitational

12 December 2007 — Rosewood hosted the 12th annual Eagle Invitational Wrestling Tournament this weekend, and had three of its own wrestlers finish in the top of their class.

Olivia Neal was the top placer of the Rosewood grapplers, finishing in second place for the 103 division. Neal had three straight wins before falling in the championship match to Southwest Edgecombe. She started off the day with a win against Princeton’s Daniel Walker in the first round, winning with a pin in 1:40. She went on to take down South Central in 30 seconds in the second round.

Neal posted her third win with a win by decision against Hunt, 14-7. In the final round, Neal lost by technical fall 15-0 to Southwest Edgecombe.

Josh Holmes (145) earned a third-place medal, winning four of five matches. Holmes defeated opponents from Lejune and White Oak before falling to Hunt in 4:51 during the third round. The loss was Holmes’ first of the season.

By the end of the day, however, he improved his record to 13-1 with two more wins, taking down South Central and North Pitt for the third place medal.

J.P. Person also had a strong finish in the heavyweight division, earning fourth-place honors. Person had three wins, defeating Lejune in 54 seconds in the first round. He also had wins against Southwest Edgecombe and Beddingfield.

The Eagles finished in seventh place overall, with 104.5 points.

Earlier in the week, Rosewood hosted Coach Bill Edmundson’s alma mater, wrestling the Beddingfield Bruins Wednesday night.

Things went back and forth early in the match, with Beddingfield actually pulling ahead of the Eagles at one point. But the matches progressed to Rosewood’s more experienced wrestlers, things turned strongly in the Eagles’ favor, and Rosewood won the match, 60-24.

Rosewood had winners in all but four divisions, with losses in the 140, 152, 171, and 189 divisions.

Coach Edmundson said he was especially impressed by the performance of the two ladies on his roster Wednesday, Olivia Neal and Kelly Cosgrove.

“I was very impressed with our young ladies tonight,” he said, “pinning their opponents in less than one minute. Kelly and Olivia are very aggressive, and with both of them weighing in at 103, it gives us options at the two weight classes.”

Rosewood’s next match will be at home when the Eagles take on Princeton. The match, originally scheduled for this Thursday, has been rescheduled for December 20.
