Progress good on new Princeton elementary school

19 December 2007 — “We’ve had incredible weather.”

Ann Williams, Associate Superintendent for Facilities Services for Johnston County Schools was commenting on the very favorable weather to help with the construction projects around the county, and particularly on the new Princeton Elementary School.

While she acknowledged the warm weather and lack of rain hasn’t helped the water supply, the construction projects she shepherds have moved along sharply.

“Floors have been poured, the plumbing and electrical is in, the outside sewer work for service at the school has been completed, the curb and gutter has been put in place, and grass has been seeded to stabilize the soil on site.”

The one problem that they have encountered on the project was three weeks after they placed the order for the steel for the buildings, the steel company sold. That delayed their filling the order, but the steel has been delivered to the site and welders are getting the building structures up.

She noted that every nine days one of the buildings should be completed.

Masons have started working on brickwork on the new buildings.

That has created a bit of a problem as presently without water at the site, water is having to be pumped at a hydrant and brought into the site.

The town is completing their work to allow the water to be run to the new school. R.D. Braswell Construction, who was the low bidder, said they should have the notice to proceed with the work on January 9, and expect to have water to the site within ten days.

Mrs. Williams reported that the school system has received the permit from the Department of Transportation for construction of the turn-in lane at the school, and for the deceleration lane.

Mrs. Williams said the school system has not missed an opening date in the recent rounds of construction, but does recall a school that was close, but it was Feb. 5 before floors were poured for that school. “We’re light-years ahead of where we were on that project.”

While there is gravel down for the driveways, they will not be paved until summer.

The furniture for the new school should be ordered next week.
