MAUDE T. CAPPS

Maude Rose Toler Capps, 90, of Smithfield, died Thursday evening, January 3, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. 

Born November 14, 1917 in Johnston County, she was a daughter of the late Sidney E. and Rose Ingram Toler and was the widow of Herman W. Capps.  She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude Edwards, Martha Worley, and Meartie Wadsworth; a brother, Charlie Toler; and a grandson, Little Joe Baker.  She was a member of the Tee’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, January 6 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with the Rev. Dennis Pollock and the Rev. Percy Coleman officiating.  Burial will follow in the Baker’s Chapel Church Cemetery.

Surviving are her sons, James W. Capps and wife Roma and Donnie L. Capps and wife Pauline, all of Smithfield, and J. T. Capps and wife Virginia of Four Oaks; her daughters, Mary R. Pope of Benson, Esther Baker and husband Joe and Beronia R. Capps, all of Smithfield, Deborah Jean Ganter and husband J. J. of Berwick, PA, and Cindy R. Allen of Four Oaks; her sisters, Mary Rose of Smithfield, Mit Worley of Princeton, and Lillie Holt of Wendell; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and ten step grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m.

JOHNNIE ALLEN JERNIGAN SR.

Johnnie Allen Jernigan, Sr., 69, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday morning, January 1, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. 

He was born September 25, 1938 to the late Othar Leon Jernigan and Hazel Britt Jernigan.

Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday evening, January 3, at Casey Funeral Home with the Reverend Lewis Baker officiating.  Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday morning at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bridgers Jernigan; a son and daughter-in-law, Allen Jernigan Jr. and wife Kelly of Goldsboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Deana Grant and husband Todd of Central, SC; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Otto Jones of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Jackson Grant, Mary Chase Grant, Harrison Grant, Cameron Jernigan; four nephews, James and Doug Jones, and Mike and Tony Bridgers; and a great-nephew, Michael Jones.

PERRY LEE JOHNSON

Perry Lee Johnson, 59, of Goldsboro, died Wednesday evening, January 2, at home.

Mr. Johnson was born in Harnett County on Jan. 12, 1948, to the late Jack Lee and Laura James Johnson. He was a member of the Blood Bought Church. He was retired from the Wayne Memorial Hospital maintenance department.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held this evening (Friday, January 4) at 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Goldsboro. Pastor Linda Burroughs will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Johnson; two sons, Wayne Johnson and his wife, Judy, of Seven Springs and Michael Johnson and his wife, Carrie, of Grantham; two daughters, Danna Johnson Price and her husband, Richard, of Elroy and Selina Mangum of Grantham; two brothers, Douglas Johnson of Goldsboro and Jesse Johnson and his wife, Kathy, of Rosewood; two sisters, Edith Colmore and her husband, Don, of Goldsboro and Jackie Eakes and her husband, Jimmy, of Goldsboro; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1201 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

GEORGE R. WILLIAMSON

George Ray Williamson, 81, of Princeton, died Wednesday, January 2.

Born on March 18, 1926 in Johnston County, Mr. Williamson was a son of the late Carl Arthur and Eva Boykin Williamson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Williamson was a member of the American Legion and Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, January 5, at Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church. The Revs. Calvin Heath and Dennis Pollock will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are his son, Lola Woodard Williamson; three sons, Richard Bruce Williamson of Kinston, Raymond Sherrill Williamson of Goldsboro, and George Ray Williamson Jr. of Princeton; two brothers, Oliver Williamson of Selma and Ben Williamson of Kinston; three sisters, Frances Phillips of Virginia Beach, Va., Bonnie Gwaltney of Long Beach, California, and Effie Woodruff of Princeton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church, 5430 Princeton-Kenly Road, Kenly NC 27542.

NANCY T. CRUSE

Nancy Cleo Toler Cruse, 64, of Goldsboro, died Thursday morning, December 27, at the Brian Center.

Nancy was born in Wayne County on November 12, 1943 to the late Ransom Toler and Leona McFatter Toler. She had worked as a nurse's aide at Howell's Child Care.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 29 at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ira Williford and Joe Ben Sauls officiating. Interment was Sunday, December 30 at 2 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Nancy is survived by her husband, James Earl Cruse; her sons, Timmy Franklin Hartley and wife, JeongAe, of Seoul, South Korea, James Joseph Cruse and wife, Jennifer, of Princeton; her sisters, Rosalee Jinnette, Norma Williford and Barbara Murphy, all of Goldsboro; her brothers, George Earl Toler, Melvin Toler and Ransom Toler Jr., all of Goldsboro, Billy Ray Toler of Princeton; and her grandsons, William Andrew Cruse and Nathan Alexander Cruse.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl McFatter.

JUDY H. DRIVER

Judy Hood Driver, 59, of Princeton, died Wednesday, December 26 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Born January 1, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie Richard and Gladys Thompson Hood. She was a member of the 1st North Carolina, 11th Regiment Auxiliary.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 29 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Craig Langston officiating, with visitation following.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Driver, a son, Scott Driver of Princeton; a daughter, Susannah Driver of Princeton; and a brother, Johnnie Hood of Land O' Lakes, Florida.

HESTER B. GURLEY

Hester Elizabeth Bailey Gurley, 87, of Delmar, Maryland, formerly of Pikeville, died Saturday, December 29. 

She was born in Johnston County on July 4, 1920 to the late Cicero Veran Bailey and Hatti Deleona Parrish Bailey. 

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, January 2, at the chapel of Casey Funeral Home in Princeton with Reverend Andy Stoval officiating.  Burial followed in the Creech Family Cemetery. 

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Raeford Gurley; two sons, Thomas R. Gurley Jr. of West Virginia and Phillip Wayne Gurley of Tennessee; two daughters, Barbara Miller of Maryland and Rita Sue Wing of Georgia; a sister, Estelle Bailey Ciolkosz of Hampton, Virginia; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

 

MARY R. LITTLE

Mary Ellen Rackley Little, 69, of Princeton, died Wednesday, December 19 at WakeMed in Raleigh.

Born in Wayne County on April 20, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Monroe and Maggie Rackley.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Little, and one son, Anson Little of Princeton.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 22 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with the Rev. Marcus Riggs and the Rev. Vance Harrell officiating. Burial followed in the Little Family Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church Mother's Morning Out Program, 140 W. Market St., Smithfield, N.C. 27577.

 

ELAINE H. MCLEOD

Elaine Hill McLeod, 48, of Smithfield, died Wednesday, December 26, after a battle with cancer.

Born March 4, 1959 in Wake County, Mrs. McLeod was a daughter of Larry B. Hill and Priscilla E. Lassiter, both of Smithfield. She was a retired nurse and a member of Wilson's Mills Baptist Church.

The funeral was held Friday, December 28 at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial followed in Hills of the Neuse Memorial Gardens.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Randy W. McLeod; a son, Brooks McLeod of Princeton; a daughter, Lauren Strickland of Mebane; two brothers, Channing Hill of Clayton and Andy Allen of Smithfield; a sister, Camille Mouser of Clayton; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund at Wilson's Mills Baptist Church, P.O. Drawer C, Wilson's Mills NC 27593.

MARIE B. MITCHELL

Marie Boyette Mitchell, 94, of Princeton, died Wednesday, December 19.

She was born in Johnston County on March 14, 1913, to the late James and Ella Boyette, and was widow of Willie Mitchell.

Two children survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 22 at Rains Crossroads F.W.B. Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The Rev. Calvin Heath officiated.

JOYCE P. PEEDIN

Joyce Phillips Peedin, 75, of Selma, died at her home on Saturday, December 29.

A daughter of the late Jack and Addie Woodard Phillips, Mrs. Peedin was a member of Selma Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Guy Holland.

A funeral service was held Monday, December 31 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma, with the Revs. T.P. Davis, Randall Woodard, and Tim Strickland officiating. Burial followed in the Bizzell Grove Pentecostal Church cemetery.

Surviving are a son, Larry Holland of Smithfield; two stepsons, Pete Peedin and Joey Peedin; two sisters, Brenda Woodard of Princeton and Maxine Strickland of Kenly; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Dewey Anderson of Pine Level.

ROBERT W. RASCH

Robert "Bob" Walter Rasch, 82, of Rosewood, died Monday, December 31 after many years of illness at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Robert was born in Maple Heighs, Ohio on October 5, 1925, to the late Walter and Rose Satava Rasch.

Bob was a naval veteran who served on the USS Princeton aircraft carrier as an aviation ordinance man during World War II. Robert was a member in good standing for many years at the American Legion Post 309 and VFW Post 3290 in Maple Heights.

Robert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Novalie Rasch; his daughter and son-in-law, Roberta "Bobbi" Jean and Ret. Master Sgt. Jimmie Lee Stanford Jr., of Goldsboro and a sister, Virginia Rasch Rafert, of Mentor, Ohio.

ROSE B. SHOWS

Rose Barron Shows, 69, of Riceville, Tennessee, died Wednesday morning, December 26. 

She was born February 16, 1938 and was the daughter of the late Charles Ray Barron.

Graveside services were conducted on Saturday morning, December 29, at the Price Cemetery in Pine Level. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 5th, at the Riceville First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Shows of Riceville; her daughter, Mickey Martin of Selma; her mother, Nannie Crumpton Barron of Highland, TX; her brother, Charles Barron of Port Arthur, TX; her sisters, Ann Brisendine of Livingston, LA, Nancy Adams of Beaumont, TX, Grace Lee of Highland, TX, Debbie Griffith of Seabrook, TX, and Elaine Hess of Austin, TX; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Riceville First Baptist Church Building Fund at P O Box 3344, Riceville, TN  37370-3344.

J.C. VINSON JR.

Joseph Clarence "Murdock" Vinson Jr., 70, of Goldsboro, died Monday morning, December 31, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

J.C. was born in Wayne County on September 2, 1937, to the late Joseph C. Vinson Sr. and Julia Cox Vinson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 3 at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Burial will follow in the Princeton Cemetery.

Mr. Vinson is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lucille Vinson; his brothers, Thomas E. Vinson III of Angier, Carlton Russell Vinson of Rhode Island and John H. Vinson of Goldsboro; his sisters, Betty Lila V. White of Sequin, Texas, Julia Carol V. Gaskins of Goldsboro and Edna Earl V. White of Jourdanton, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his foster sister and brothers, Patricia Riggs, Bobby Lee Parnell and Edward Parnell; and special friends, Bernard and Mavone Thompson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Prentice Franklin Vinson and a foster brother, James Parnell.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.
