Bulldogs come out of break with win over Union

By Barry Merrill

09 January 2008— The Princeton boys struggled Thursday night as they came back from the Christmas break, but prevailed in a 58-49 win over Union.

The Spartans keyed on Princeton’s big post man, Josh Barefoot, and the strategy seemed to work much of the night as the two teams exchanged the lead most of the game.

Keying on Barefoot allowed Christopher Hinton some open looks, and Hinton responded with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Ryan Daughtry tied Hinton for the top scoring honors with 18 as well.

Barefoot still had 13 in the game as Princeton pulled away with an 18-10 surge in the final quarter.

After the game, Princeton Coach Jeff Davis was complaining about Union’s offensive rebounding. “We didn’t work hard enough on the boards, boxing out. We had a lot of open 3’s. We should have hit more. That would have drawn them out of their zone sooner. Once they went to the man-to-man in the fourth quarter, we were able to drive to the hoop successfully.”

Over the break, the Bulldogs played in the Roanoke Christmas Tournament again this year. Again the Princeton boys had an impressive win in the first round only to fall to the host Roanoke team in the finals.

Daughtry had an impressive 37 points in the opener as he made their opponent pay for not defending against his deadly three-point shot.

Hinton led Princeton in the finals with 13 points.

The Dawgs put their 10-3 non-conference mark on the line Tuesday when they hosted Hobbton, and start conference play Friday when Spring Creek comes to Princeton.
