Water rate hike to encourage conservation

09 January 2008 — Following Johnston County and others, the Princeton Town Board passed a water rate increase to encourage conservation Monday night.

The rate increase will only impact large users. Customers using 5,000 gallons or more, which represent only one of about five customers, would see any increase.

An in town water customer using 7500 gallons would see their total town bill increase from $117.58 to $120.15. A 10,000 gallon a month user would go from $147.70 to $155.40.

Out of town customers would see the same increase, but as they are only charged for water, and only their initial service charge is more. A 7500 gallon user would go from $47.55 to $50.13. 10,000 gallon users would have a $65.50 bill, as compared with $57.80 presently.

Princeton Town Board members acknowledged the rate change would probably not hurt big users enough to really punish them, but hoped the rate would be an incentive for them to consider conservation.
