Call for blood donations

23 January 2008 — Two weeks into the new year, the American Red Cross faces a severe shortage of several blood types. Locally, supplies of type O negative, B negative, and A negative blood are at less than a day's supply despite repeated calls to donors to give blood over the past month.

The Red Cross is asking blood donors to donate immediately to prevent supply levels from dropping even further in the coming days and weeks.

"It is important to note that coming off a major holiday period, the need for blood never takes a holiday," says Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region. "In addition to the holiday challenges, during the winter, donations drop and the supply of blood often dips to dangerously low levels,"

While all blood types are needed, the low supply of type O blood is of particular concern. Type O is the most commonly used blood type. O negative blood can be used for all patients, but it is often essential to the treatment of trauma patients, newborns, and women who are pregnant.

Blood drives are scheduled at various times and locations across the area, including:

January 25: Wal-Mart in Clayton on Highway 70, 1:30-6 p.m.

February 2: Johnston Community Church, 450 Janie Road, Selma, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

February 5: Smithfield Community Blood Drive, First Baptist Church, 202 South Fourth Street, Smithfield, 1:30-6 p.m. (call 919-934-8481 for information and appointments)

February 7: Kenly Community Blood Drive sponsored by Charles M. "Mr. Majestic" Phillips, Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 2201 Piney Grove Church Road, Kenly, 3-7:30 p.m. (call Jay Sauls at 919-284-2470 or 919-631-5035 for information and appointments)

February 10: American Red Cross Johnston County Branch, 801 South Third Street, Smithfield, 12:30-5 p.m. (call 919-934-8481 for information and appointments)

February 16: Micro United Methodist Church, 104 Fayetteville Street, Micro, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (call Bettie Smith at 919-284-2358 for information and appointments)

February 23: Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 7438 NC Highway 96 North, Selma, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (call Ann Boughman at 919-965-3844 for information and appointments)

February 27: Selma Masonic Lodge, 405 N. Pollock Street, Selma, 2:30-7 p.m. (call Roger Diegele at 919-965-4631 for information and appointments)

Donors are asked to visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (800-448-3543). The Carolinas Blood Services Region needs 1,000 blood donations a day in order to adequately supply the 103 hospitals it serves. Donors must be 17 or older and weigh at least 110 pounds.
