Lady Bulldogs best Rosewood in first round

By Barry Merrill

20 February 2008 — Haile Meadows hit a three-pointer to put Rosewood up by five with about six minutes left in the first round conference tournament match-up at Princeton Monday night. It looked as if the neighborhood rivals might have the last laugh in the third meeting of the two teams.

But the Lady Bulldogs and senior Brittany Baker turned up the defensive pressure and limited the Lady Eagles to just two points the rest of the way in a 50-38 win.

Princeton advances to the second round at Mt. Olive College Thursday with a 4 p.m. meeting with the second place team in the regular season, Ayden-Grifton.

Meadows and her Rosewood teammates seemed determined to deny Princeton Monday night. Stubbornly hanging in with the Lady Bulldogs through three quarters, Meadows hit a nice two pointer to tie the game a minute into the final quarter, and then Shantal Johnson converted a missed shot with a rebound and an easy layup to give Rosewood the lead, and then Meadows hit her three-pointer to give Rosewood their biggest lead of the night.

Baker, the Princeton Captain, took charge at this point. On the next trip down, she drew a foul and cashed a free throw. The next trip she fed Rebecca Harlan underneath the basket for an easy layup.

Rosewood’s aggressive defense throughout the game started costing as Princeton moved to the double bonus on fouls. When Danielle Mitchell got fouled on a defensive rebound, she ended up at the line for two shots. She hit them both to tie the game. She hit a nice field goal about a minute later to give Princeton the lead, and Baker hit a hook shot with about 2 minutes left. During the final three minutes, Rosewood was forced to foul to try to get back in the game.

Baker hit four free throws in the final minute, Harlan hit four, and Tylan George and Amber Wood each hit two down the stretch as Princeton kept on building the lead.

Princeton took an early 10-6 lead in the first quarter, cut Christina Bruton and Johnson led a second quarter surge as Rosewood tied it up at the half.

The two teams went back and forth in the third quarter, with Baker hitting six of her 19 points in the quarter. They remained tied at the end of the third quarter, setting up the dramatics of the final eight minutes.

Harlan, Wood and George had eight, seven and six points respectively for Princeton. Meadows and Bruton had seven each to lead Rosewood, while Mary Jo Moore had five.

The loss ends the year for Rosewood. It was the final game for seniors April Pfeifffer, Misha Chester, Moore, and Melissa Hall.
