Eagles take fourth in conference standings

20 February 2008 — As the first half final seconds were ticking off the clock, the Eagles’ Holt Rains was back on the court after riding the pine with foul trouble for most of the half. He suddenly stopped his dribble and launched a very long three-pointer at the last possible second. The nothing but net shot sent Rosewood to the break with the lead and momentum that helped take them to a 58-54 win at Princeton Friday night.
The win represented a season-sweep for the Eagles who ended up in fourth in the conference, with half of their league wins coming against Princeton. It ended up not affecting the standings, however, for either team.

Last Tuesday the Eagles fell to North Duplin at Rosewood, 46-44. Princeton was at conference leader Ayden-Grifton, and the Bulldogs fell, 69-43.
Friday night Princeton’s Ryan Daughtry tried to rally the Bulldogs, and the senior stepped up to hit three straight three-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor as the Dawgs stormed to a 47-43 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Rosewood’s defense and free throw shooting made the difference down the stretch, as Daughtry would only have one more field goal in the game and the three point hoops were nowhere to be found.
Rosewood hit 12 of 15 from the free throw line to sew up the win. Stephen McIntyre hit four of five down the stretch.
In the first 30 seconds of the game, Rosewood was dealt a tough blow as Rains picked up two fouls and was sent to the bench. For most of the rest of the half he stayed on the seats, but his partner in the paint, Tyler Muntz stepped up to fill the void, as he hit six baskets in the first half.

In the third quarter Rains tried to keep the momentum going as he hit five baskets in the frame and helped push the Eagles to a three point advantage as the quarter closed.
Rains ended the game with 18 points, while Muntz had 16. Sean Cornman had 11 for the victorious Eagles.

Princeton’s Daughtry led all scorers with 23, Josh Barefoot also had a strong night with 16, and Christopher Hinton added eight.
Rains had another big night against North Duplin with 14 points. McIntyre added 12.
Daughtry led Princeton at A-G with 15 points. Michael Radford was the next high scorer with five.
